  1. There is no harm of contacting with professors, if you do it right way. Some professors explicitly forbids to write to them about admission. It's better not to do that. Otherwise, you should contact the professors from your field of interests. I suggest not to ask them to help you admit; rather ask them if they would take new students next year so that you would apply(of course after explaining your interests which must match with theirs). Moreover, people say that communication should start well before admission process starts so that professors can understand that you are genuinely interested. Some professors may reply you while some may not. Dont worry, they will consider your application, if they are willing to take new students. Some of the professors I contacted did not respond instantly, but they wrote to me later asking if I am still interested.

  2. Actually now I just asked a person at the university he said i'll get 1200 out of the 1600....do internationals pay more taxes???

Are you sure they will cut all of 400 for only tax? Usually schools waive tuition and health fees, besides these, they have some minor fees, which each student has to pay.

  3. I have wrote to them and they replied that they had not heard from many students yet. So, they may not make any offer before April 14. Anyway, I have extended my deadline at another school for three days. I guess this should be enough.

  4. This is first time for me too. However, two schools have sent me I-20 as soon as I got admission (they did not wait for my decision). Both of them sent it through FedEx. But one of my friends got I-20 over normal mail. I do not know which country you are from, but in my country, it is always advisable that visa application should be made three months prior to date of travel. So, I cannot afford to wait for my I-20 to reach me over normal mail.

  5. I am in similar situation. I was going to accept the offer of UMass Amherst, then UMD(College Park) informed that I am on the wait list. I decided to ask for 3 days extension from UMass. I shall mail UMD on the 16th asking about my condition. If they dont reply or cant say it by then, then I shall accept the offer of UMass. In the mean time, I am collecting information on UMD, so that if I am accepted at UMD, I can take my decision quickly.

  6. oooh... :(

so do they usually notify applicants that they are on the wait list or they wont say anything until April 15?

Maybe I'm just trying to comfort myself, but the officer sounded sincere in that she explained that rejection letters have been sent and i wasn't one of them blah blah blah

anyways :\ thanks for the advice

In my case, I was notified. They also wanted to know that if I am still interested in their program.

  7. I am not that much optimistic. I guess they wanted my opinion because if I am not interested then they will pick another person if a seat falls vacant. I found in the result section of gradcafe that some other people also received same notification. I guess they all received same type of e-mails.

  8. My application deadline was 1/15/08. No official waitlist email for me, but I'm guessing that I've been placed on an informal waitlist or that the program has some sort of ranking system. I applied for a Masters program with rolling admission, so I'm wondering if that has also contributed to the delay (PhD decisions taking priority?). I created a post about this a few days ago in the Waiting it Out forum, but no one replied.

And congrats, Maa. Hope good news comes your way shortly.

Thank you all. UMD told me that their wait list is unranked. They are supposed to know about my condition by April 15.

  9. Well, it depends. You should receive a letter of acceptance with your admission offer package, which you have to sign and send to the school. Sometimes, they want this letter to be sent over snail mail, sometimes, they want you to send it through fax. Moreover, some schools prefer to have acceptance e-mail from the students along with this hard letter. I would suggest you to send an e-mail to the advisor (or whoever the person incharge of graduate admission) and ask them to inform you about the procedure. If I were you I would send an e-mail informing my decision and then send the hard letter (if there is any) over express mail. In this way, I can extend the time for my decision and at the same time, even if the hard letter is delayed to reach their hand, they would at least know about my decision.

    Good luck.

  10. ok so finally there is someone like me . Well i maybe wrong but i have a hunch that this maybe the waitlist . What do you say fellows?

May be, may be not. Even if we are waitlisted, will it do any good? As far as I know, waitlisted people get their resutls after April 15. Before that, I have to let other people know about my decisions. So, even if a positive news break out after April 15, it will be of no use to me :(

  11. Is it okay to email your potential advisor to ask for contact information of his/her current graduate students? On the other hand, is it alright to ask him/her if they are planning on retiring any time soon? Because I have this horrible fear that my advisor might not last thru my graduate school years due to her age.

I have the same fear for my advisor. Therefore I asked her if she is leaving the university in near future. She replied me saying that if she had had that possibility, she would have not taken new student.

Can't you find the contact information of his/her graduate students from his/her website? I am not sure what would be his/her reaction if you ask him/her, but some professors encourage to contact with their students.

  12. I sent this exact email to my assigned advisor at a school I was accepted at. I was very polite, told him I knew he was busy and that short answers were fine, etc.

He responds with this fairly rude email about how email was not the right venue for such a discussion and that I should call him at his office. 1) Rudness from your potential adviser during your first correspondence from him/her is not a good thing. 2) I generally always prefer email to chit-chat on the phone. 3) Long distance is not a preferred thing for the starving student.

In the end, this left a HORRIBLE taste in my mouth, and I ended up more or less eliminating that school at that point. My feeling of a generally grumpy/stingy atmosphere was later confirmed by some honest current student.

Thank God, none of my advisors turned out to be like this.

I wrote to one of my advisors saying that I have couple of options on the table and I shall make my decisions by the end of the month. On the reply, she congratulated me for having another option and asked to take longer time to make the decisions. She then answered to my questions with greater details than I expected.

Then I wrote to my other advisor with same questions. His response was not that much elaborated but it was nowhere near rudeness [he even used smileys!]

  13. I am in the same boat too. I have not heard from Maryland College Park, U of Virginia, U of Minnesota, U of Rochester, UC Davis, U of Pittsburgh, U of Florida, U of Waterloo and U of Alberta. I am not too much freaked out because I got acceptance from UMass Amherst and UC Irvine. I am almost sure that I shall go to one of these two (except Maryland says yes by this time). But since I have spent a lot of money in application purpose, I definitely want to know results from them, be it yes or no.

By the way, I have applied for PhD in theory and AI.
