  1. Hello all,

I submitted a proposal for a Fulbright to Germany , I've heard and read selection for the German Fulbright can run into JUNE. I hope final notice is sooner than June..............

If it makes you feel better, Germany was one of the first countries to notify last year. :) I think all of the researchers and ETAs heard back in mid-to-late March.

  2. Hi Geilezeit,

Could you tell me, how did you know that the section is unscored? Was it written in your test? In what part then?

May be you are an international student? May be they inform people who take GRE outside English-speaking countries about this unscored section because they undertstand (oh, may be there is a spark of humanity left in them!) that poor international students already have enough stress from this test? I am international - and I hope the miracle of an announced unscored section will happen to me!! laugh.gif

I'm an American and took the test in the US. I had the standard 2 essays, the real math section, the real verbal section, and then I got a message that I could take another math section for the chance to win $100 if I answered all of the questions correctly. Everything that I had read had indicated that test takers wouldn't know which section was unscored, but mine was clearly marked. FWIW, my real math section was MUCH more difficult than the experimental section.

  3. Ooooooooh!!!!! Why did they change that???? Wicked wicked WICKED ETS people!!!! ohmy.gif

I took the GRE in August 2009, and I also got a message about an unscored, optional section with the chance to win $100. I did not have any fill-in-the-blank questions on my actual exam; they were all in the unscored section (although, of course, things can change in a year!).

  4. Germany ETA-ers:

Did anyone who was assigned to Sachsen, find out which city they will be living in? I think most, if not all of the other states have notified their grantees about where they are going to be. Thanks!

And, to add to that, did any Berlin people get their placements?

  5. I got my letter yesterday. Which state did you apply for? I'm going to Bayern. :D

I'll be in Berlin. Bayern is gorgeous-- I studied abroad in Munich, and I loved wandering around the towns and the mountains! Plus, you get an awesome football team. :)

  6. **UPDATE** I came across this little gem of information today: http://us.fulbrightonline.org/documents/europe-onepager.pdf. According to this sheet, there were 70 application for 8 spots, up from 26 last year. WOW. I'm assuming "2009" means applied in 2009, because this page http://us.fulbrightonline.org/competition_europe.html says that for 2009-2010 there were 26 awards. Make of these numbers what you will...

I'm pretty sure that page with the 2009 stats was online in the fall, so I think it reflects the applications and awards from last year.

  7. Meh....Don't feel bad, I did it too. Being resourceful is not a crime! :D

Me too. Plus, I'm not sure it was accidental; it sounds like IIE sent three un-BCCed emails (2 to ETAs, 1 to researchers).

  8. okay, thought I read that an ETA had received two separate emails, one for the passport and one for the German application. 220 seems like a lot of recommended finalists for the research grant. It is usually 1.5-2 times the number of grants available, but maybe they just liked a ton of people this year and had a ton of applicants.

Yeah, we did get two emails, but the initial email discussed both the application and passports. The second email gave us a little more information about the application. 220 finalists does seem really high for only 80 grants!

  9. If you're right, that's amazing. I'm wondering though, weren't the emails split up to research and ETA applicants? that woud suck because it would mean there are still ~200 people competing for ~80 research grants (I think).

I think ETA and research applicants got different emails because the ETAs have to fill out an additional application. FWIW, there are also about 220 ETA finalists.

  10. For a number of reasons, I am considering canceling the GRE Lit on Saturday. I am wondering if anyone knows how much, if any, of your money is refunded for a cancellation.

You have to cancel three full days before the test in order to get half of the cost refunded. I'm not sure if you can still cancel and get money back for this Saturday.

I just rescheduled my test for April, which is only a $50 fee.
