  1. Hey all,

I was wondering if someone could comment on the financial support that the Fulbright program offers. I want to apply for a research fellowship (in Spain) and was thinking of taking 1 class per semester at a university in order to keep myself connected to the academics in the field as well as any workshops etc. that might be offered.

Would Fulbright pay for these tuition expenses? or would this have to come out of my stipend? thanks to all who may have answers.

  2. I think Borens are easier than Flagship Fellowships because there are more of them, can be used for a wider ranger of languages and as the poster above stated, you don't have to be advanced in the language. I know a lot of people who have gotten Borens, but have no idea as to whether or not that means they are easy/hard to get. They are competitive that much I can say.

  3. I am new to the MPP application process. I'm wondering where I fall among other MPP applicants. I have a mediocre GPA from Rice, with good GRE and two years teaching since graduation. (See stats below). I expect great employer recs but am less confident about profs. Would I be competitive for the top schools like HKS and WWS? How about GPPI or Duke? Where would I be competitive for a scholarship? (I can't do 55k/year out of pocket).

    Undergraduate Work

    3.45 from Rice University

History major with coursework in poli sci (8 classes) and econ (5 classes). Editor-in-chief of university student newspaper.

    GRE

    AW: 5

    Quant: 800

    Verbal: 700

    Total: 1500

    Since College

-Two years teaching high school social studies in a TFA-like setting (though not a corps member) in Houston

-Half a year volunteer teaching in Kenya

    College Internships

    -State Department Refugee Bureau

-International Visitor Program, Georgia office (2 years)

I think you stand a pretty good chance. What would be your focus? International affairs, I presume. As far as LOR, I would say pick the professor you are most confident with and if possible tell them what you want them to hilight in their letter. And then use the other two references from work/internships.

  4. What language are you applying for? If you're looking into Arabic, keep in mind that you can also apply for the CASA fellowships, which are a different format but I don't believe they require any commitment after graduation. Good luck!

I agree that they are a pretty good offer. Yes, I will be applying for the Arabic program. CASA is good, but you have to pay 2,200 dollars or so in fees and they don't have internship, homestays, registration with the local university or private tutor components (whereas the overseas flagship does). I'm still thinking about whether or not to apply. As for Boren, you have to be in graduate school, and I am not sure I will get in any where, it would suck to get a Boren and then lose it because of dropping the ball on this requirement. Must admit though, the Boren is a pretty sweet deal if you qualify, Good luck with the Boren!

  5. Hey this is my first post.

I'm applying to IR related programs with one year of full time work experience (legal assistant) that is somewhat relevant to what I want to do. I also well as two internships (one with an NGO in Europe--- if that matters) and three part-time positions that I had as an undergrad under my belt. With these positions I've written a lot of articles and stuff about international topics... so I guess that makes me published.

    GRE Q- 630 V- 590 W-4.5

undergrad, top 5 liberal arts college- 3.6

Grad school- MA at top 10 research university- 3.9

I've have a lot of study abroad experiences though, mostly for research and language study: I've been to Egypt twice (for study/research), Italy three times (again study/research) and Spain (study) and Morocco (language study). Now, I've won a scholarship to study in Kuwait this year.

The schools I'm looking at are WWS, KSG, Yale and possibly Fletcher MIT MA in poli sci. My LOR should be solid, from recent employers and past advisors.

I'm a horrible standardized test taker plus am currently broke, so retaking the GRE isn't happening. I honestly don't know if I would do any better.

So all this is to ask, what do people think about having lots of international experience but being without several years of work experience. I figure I will try and apply and see what happens, but I am interested in other people's perspectives. Thanks.
