    History 2010

I didn't, they just did it. It's kinda funny because they've treated me like I'm an important person. They gave me reimbursements to visit them and everything else, and it just feels kind of weird to be in this position where people genuinely care about you've studied and want to study. I usually feel half embarrassed explaining to people (outside of the education/history sphere) what I like to study and why. But I feel very grateful to be in this position right now. Don't give up guys, there's still hope.

NYU is making me angry. They're the last school I've yet to hear from and I have to make a decision real soon. I called today and they said they're still reviewing apps (based by field) and that I will hear back from them next week at the latest. I feel like I'm pressed for time because my only admit has increased their offer, so they're kinda pushing me to give them an answer. I hope I don't come off as a pompous ass, but is anyone else in this position?
  3. For those of you looking for houses more than apartments, I've found rentbloomington.net and bloomingtonrent.com to be helpful. A house is what I'd like to find because it seems that some of the 1 bed apartments are fairly high (at least for the stipend I'll be receiving).
  4. If you have any chance to, then visit. Both schools should offer reimbursements and only then will you be able to make a sound decision. Feel out both schools, the city, the faculty, and the students. Good luck!
  5. I got the exact same email as you, probably word for word. I don't know if I should take their offer as a compliment or an insult, I'm stuck somewhere in between. However, knowing that I have been accepted to one PhD program eases my mind, because otherwise I would have likely considered this offer. Chicago's awesome and what's another 20 or 30k of debt stacked onto my undergrad debt? At least that's what I'm thinking I would've thought if I were without any concrete offers. Good luck with the rest of your apps!

Ticklemepink, I heard from Indiana 2 weeks ago when I received an email that seemed like a waitlist, a "we'll accept you if we find the money to give you" type thing. I believe there was only one other one like that on the results page, so I don't know about the rest. However, my PA contacted me about their search for funds, and fortunately, they offered me an official acceptance today, detailing the funding and everything, minus when an admitted students' day would be. Indiana was my best fit of all applications and I'm more than 95% sure I'll attend. Just have to think of a way to survive on their stipend. Good luck and I hope you hear good news from them. By the way, have you heard from UMich? I got their rejection today.

Thanks for the congrats, Nytusse and VampireLincoln. I was fortunate enough to have a potential adviser there who apparently wanted to work with me and who went searching for funds, which were fortunately found. Contact your potential adviser there, Vampire. See what he or she can do. My undergrad adviser told me to do the same last week. By the way, I watched 'The Transient' yesterday. Impressive. The quality of the movie reminded me of 'Townies' (the movie). Good luck!

Hey guys, if any of you received the email from Indiana a few weeks ago about not being able to offer you admission because of funds, there is hope. They just offered me a 5 year fellowship package, so hold out hope and contact people.

So mr or ms who got accepted at NYU, congratulations. Did you go to the prospectives weekend or not? Was the email from a professor or a standard acceptance email? Thanks.

What's also bad is having to wait for postal mail rejections. Why can't they all be swift and relatively painless like those who send you an email? We don't live in the middle ages to wait weeks and weeks for a shitty, f'ing letter with two lines of meaningless words. (no offense to those studying medieval history) Absolutely ridiculous! *Rant over. Thanks for listening.*

That's why I took a year-long break to do something else other than school. I had enough on my mind senior year, writing my thesis and whatnot, and didn't want to add any undue stress during that time. It also gave me time to think about what I want to do, but considering the results so far, I may have to delay that. But a roadblock here and there shouldn't detour me completely. Good luck is all I can say.

But you have two acceptances already, so you're in good shape. My thinking was that if Illinois doesn't want me, where there was plenty of faculty to work with me on my proposed plan and interest in it, then there is a very good chance that other places will think the same way. I kind of understand it though, because my area of interest is not something 'cool' or studied very much right now in history, especially when European history is dominated by German, French, or Russian history. But, still, damn. I'm not despairing, just being realistic. It sucks having all my pessimistic predictions confirmed. Now I must do something about that Indiana waitlist because that's all I've got. Any ideas?

Same here, except mine was a great fit. Quite a bummer. Looks like the rest of my applications will be like this.

So I'm gone for 24 hours and away from my computer, I get back, and see tons of results posted. What's up with Chicago sending that email the other day about the admissions timetable if they're already notifying people of acceptances? Mark that one up too to the negative pile for me, I guess. Congrats to those admitted!

What's the consensus on purgatorial waitlists? Just wait it out or do something about it?

Think of it as a personalized mass email. I'm sure everyone got the same.

It does seem that way. And yes, the department sent the standard reject letter. The only comfort is that they had the pdf catalogued by my name, much like they had all the applicants do for every document submitted, which quite frankly was a pain in the ass. Good luck! Hope your news is better than mine.

No money, no honey at Berkeley. 400 applicants, not one of the chosen ones. In other news, Chicago just sent me an email notifying me that they've forwarded my app to the admissions committee in the History dept. and that I should hear something by March 12. Anyone else receive that email? It seems like a standard one where they just give a heads-up on what they're doing and nothing more.

Other than an email urging (or reminding) me to apply for the FLAS 2 weeks ago, not a thing. I'm wondering too.
