  1. Ahh, ya it's me. Thanks! I just finished teaching the CDA clinic labs too, I was a lot more in my element for that. I'm really looking forward to starting school, and who knows, maybe I can buy Li's books. Thanks, and if you are applying, keep it up. Feel free to provate message, Thank again
  2. I'm wishing you well!!! I know the frustration of trying so hard, getting on the waitlist for the past couple of times is an amazing accomplishment in itself!!! good luck!
  3. Someone sent me this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/379131378891226/
  4. Hi Asemooooooooo I applied to U of T as a non degree student. I did complete my phonetics prereq there (the second time around) Some of the courses I found tough (I ended up with an 84% in Phonetics, which is the same mark I got 10 years ago when I first did it and I have worked with IPA snce, but I don't work with non-english sounds very often and the course was very detailed. I found U of T like any school as far as profs and difficulty, in that I did amazing in some classes and found them "easy", and I found I had to work really hard in others to pull of a half decent mark. I did quite well in the Adult Language Disorders course (It's joint linguisitcs and speech-JLS 474- or something like that), and I didn't find I was completely over whelmed by the work. Hope this helps
  5. I discovered this rule when I first applied 4 years ago.. The web site (at the time) did mention that they "usually" like courses/pre reqs to be taken within the last 10 years. Although I agree with Asemoooo that it is not descrimination in that things change and they want to ensure that you are current in your education, I also hear your frustration. I graduated, then took the CDA course, then worked for 8 years doing speech therapy, and had to go back to school because my phonetic (and every other) course was out of date, but really, I had been working using IPA every day. So I feel your pain!!!! Asemooo, you asked about taking courses at U f T, that was something I did over the last couple of years, I took 2 classes that were joint linguistics and speech (JLS) and they were offered in the rehab science building and taught by the SLP program staff. I felt it was beneficial to be in the building and make my presence known. I also took a few course on main campus to ensure that one of my academic references was from a U of T prof, again, it was my fourth attempt, so I was switching things up. Hope this helps
  6. Did Anyone also apply to U of T for Occupational Therapy? I did and I haven't heard a thing yet. I would have thought I would get a rejection letter in the mail by now, sis I already got the Acceptance package for SLP Thanks
  7. To those who have been accepted to U of T, did you get a call from faculty today?
  8. If you are not in school, you could try other research avenues. I had also called the Speech and Stuttering Institute in Toronto and asked about volunteering with research, they had spots available, but it was when I was working, so I could not do it. If you aren't in school, but your grades are top notch, then just getting experience can help I had taken 1-2 courses each year over the last 5 years to but then resign from work to take a full course load last January. Hope this is helpful
  9. I volunteered in a psychology lab. So it wasn't directly speech research, but I think just the breadth of experience helped, and I have heard that U of T is big on research. I also talked bout my interest in research in my personal submission Reading through, I see some people have stellar stats, and all I can say is, I know grades are top, so if you have top grades, it's just a matter of getting more experience.
  10. Hi Kats, VanTech and all who are feeling discouraged I applied to U of T for my 4th time, and I got in!! I am thrilled. I know how tough it is to not get the acceptance. The main thing I did different was I quit work to take more courses to really boost my GPA (which seemed ODD because I am a CDA so, I work doing speech therapy). I volunteered in a research lab to diversify my experience, and I took enough courses to pull my GPA from a 3.3 to a 3.7-3.8. On this years application I included my work experience in volunteer experience (and stated is was paid) because I found previous times that there was no way to fully account for my 8+ years of experience. Don't give up!! Feel free to ask any more specific questions
  11. Sorry to hear trejsi, don't give up. I got in to U of T, it was my 4th year applying!
  12. Ok, did I miss a huge part of the application? To apply to U of T and Western, you don't have ot complete GRE's right? I have seen a couple people talk about them and I have never done them. Please tell me I didn't miss something this huge. Thanks
  13. Yes, I think that is the one I was looking at briefly, I will look more into it. Thanks Asemoooo. Although I'm really hoping I don't need to and I get into SLP, I've been working so hard for that now.
  14. Thanks for the info, I will definitely look into that, I did my CDA there. I noticed that U of T allowed you into a Masters without a BSW, but if you had a BSW then it was a shorter program. I really don't want to take any more courses before completing a Masters, I have 2 BA's and CDA now, I think that's enough. But I do like the idea of Orillia (close to home) But the MSW is only offered in Sudbury, I had looked into that Good luck Erin
  15. SLP at U of T anyway, doesn't ask for a resume. Some of the other applicants and I have noted that we have included the relevant work experience in the volunteer experience. Unfortunately I think the application system was designed for younger people coming straight out of undergrad who would not have yet accumulated work experience. Good luck
  16. Hi All, to those of you who have also applied to Social Work, where did you apply? I plan to apply if I don't get in to SLP, but the school I was looking at (U of T and a Distance through Windsor) the applications were due December, and I didn't want to have to make a decision before hearing back from SLP. Has anyone tried the online SLP courses? I have heard of them and tried to get info, but no one has ever responded. Thanks in advance
  17. Hi Ineg You have wonderful experience, so I hope they do take a look at your application. However, be aware they take the top marks from the final 10 full courses (or 20 half courses, final 2 years) I know, because I just redid the final 2 years of school to boost my GPA enough, and make them relevant again (I did my undergrad 10 years ago and the pre reqs wet no longer valid) As for GPA, I use the Mac conversion chart, it breaks down how each school calculates the GPA, at U of T 80-84% is considered a 3.7 GPA http://sscareers.mcmaster.ca/students/tools/gpa-conversion-chart.html Good luck and I'm sure we will all be waiting anxiously for April
  18. I'm only applying to U of T, which I found frustrating, because the SLP school does not ask for a resume (OT does). SO in the past I found I was short changing myself because I only put volunteer experience in the volunteer section and left the 3000 characters in the SOP to describe all my work experience. This year I included work experience under volunteer, (but stated employed). I took a course at U of T in the Rehab building and the prof is on the board of admission and suggested I do this. As for referees, I also called the ORPAS office, because for OT is say use ref 1 and 2, but I already printed ref 1 for a language professor who wrote me an SLP referral. The office told me they will send all letters to all applicants. I did the same thing a Trejsi, I asked each ref to write specifically about each school. One ap is doing both and I asked that he write 2 letters (change SLP to OT) in the second. So I don't know what the schools are going to think if they get a bunch of letters saying how great we would be for a different profession. I'm also freaking out because I haven't heard back from my one reference yet to confirm he has mailed it away. I think for those of us who have taken the CDA course, unfortunately it is not an advantage. U of T pretty much told me they don't consider it because it is a college and in another language class I just finished in the Rehab Science Building, they taught that the use of CDA's is a consultative model equal to parent training because the SLP gives the advice, where as I have always thought I do direct therapy, under the supervision of an SLP Good luck with Dal, I hear it is a beautify school. Having a family, I'm fairly restricted as to where I can apply All the best
  19. Hi Trejsi and Asemoooooo I'm old enough that I find trying to figure out how to respond to posts very confusing!!! I'll be 35 in January. That hurt to write. My biggest hurdle when I first applied was that now some of my prereqs were 10 years old, so they didn't count. ( I completed a BA in 2002 and the CDA in 2003/4. My marks were also too low. I think my initial GPA was 3.0, which they said doesn't cut it. I requested a meeting with the head of admission last year and he told me that if you weren't over a 3.3, 3.4 you weren't considered. So all my experience was never even looked at. I have found the whole process very frustrating. But this is my ast attempt. I have now redone the final 20 half credits that they factor as a GPA, including all the pre-reqs. In doing so I completed a second BA, might as well get something out of it. I don't have all my marks back yet but I'm expecting atl east a 3.7. I'm also applying to OT and will apply to social work if I don't get in this time around. For those of you also applying for OT, are you doing it at the same school as SLP, and if so, did you find it confusing for references because it uses the same forms? Time is almost up!! Good luck everyone
  20. Hi there trejsi Did you find the info session at U of T very helpful? I have attended 5 times and haven't really taken anything away. My story is very very similar to yours. I am a CDA, been working in the field with children at a private clinic, for 8 years and at a hospital with adults for 6 years. I have recently worked with the Georgian CDA program teaching conducting therapy in the clinic. I have just completed a second BA to update and boost my GPA. This will be my forth and final application. I have not re done all 10 full credits, and with 10 years experience, what more can I do? I am applying to OT as well and looking into social work. Having a family, I am only applying to U of T. I noted you are from New Liskeard. It's a small word. My aunt volunteers with the Literacy Council there (I believe). I'm currently holding a 3.7 GPA for the 10 courses they look at. I hope it is enough. Last year I had a 3.3 and it was not. This forum is either going to give me strength or make me cry, I just haven't decided which yet. Best, Erin Your
