Well it specifically says "Fulbright Scholar" so it could be that it's not the US Student program. That program has completely different timelines.

It's always said that, even in years prior, but they typically are early. I would rely on the fact that independent FPAs all chimed in simultaneously saying we would find out for sure today after 5 pm. This is in line with years prior, as well, where FPAs generally notified applicants that they would be finding out in a couple of days. The January 31 deadline is simply a deadline.

To be fair, this is a much higher rate than some of the big NSF and NIH grants out there right now (R01's are at something like 8 or 9%!). I know we're not all scientists who have 30 years of experience, so it's not exactly a fair comparison, but I think that's just the state of science/arts and federal funding right now. Besides, you have to remember that not all of your competition is created equal. I'm sure that a good portion are "throw away" applications that didn't really make much effort and maybe started the application process a week before it was due, for example. Echoing what many before have said, we are all talented and ambitious folks on this forum, and we all definitely put in some serious effort. You'll drive yourself crazy if you think of the overall rate, because it's not random probability. I'd put money down that the majority of folks on this thread are already in the top 25-30% of those 10,000 applicants. All you can do is have faith in your own ability!

These things did happen in years prior, too. A small number of people found out indirectly through their host site, etc. It's not unheard of.

There has to be something going on. If there's a 20% chance that notifications fall on Monday - Friday in a given year, the fact that notifications have fallen on a Thursday or Friday for the past 5 years gives that a p-value of .01, which is definitely scientifically significant!

I also proposed to teach a few basic seminars in statistics and epidemiology because there's a strong need for quantitative methodology over there. Where are you thinking about working?

Yeah, I'm hopeful as well, but this week feels a lot like last week as far as no solid evidence. Unless they've completely changed protocol in regards to notifying FPA's, I'm also thinking next week it might be.

I don't think they designate alternates for recommendation. I think that designation comes after recommendation. But I also don't think it's a Fulbright Student program, because she says 5 months, and from what I can tell both the Research and ETA for Brazil are 9 months for the Student program.

I'm not completely familiar with the Scholar Program, but at least for the "Core Scholar" program it seems notifications of recommendation are sent out in November and December (http://www.cies.org/us_scholars/us_awards/Notification-Timeline.htm). Who the heck is this person and what are they referring to!? November - December CIES notifies applicants whether or not their application has been recommended for further consideration in the host country; this notification is emailed. Please let your CIES Program Officer know if your email address changed since you submitted your application.

So the Fulbright Scholar program instead of the Fulbright Student program? Are the announcements for those separate?

From what I can tell from 2012 and 2013, there was at least one FPA who knew the week of that applicants would be getting notifications. There were plenty who weren't in the loop, but there was always definitive talk (around mid-week) before the notifications actually came. I really hope I'm proven wrong, but all indications to me point to next week...

It didn't happen to be a survey did it? The rage that happened on this thread at that email...it was epic.

I went back to the thread from last year and found this to be the case, as well. FPA's knew on Wednesday that applicants would hear back by the end of the day that Friday. I wonder if that means we won't hear until next week since all our FPA's are still in the dark.

To be fair it seems equally likely it might be a Thursday, too. I second whoever said earlier it will be on one of the following dates: 23rd, 24th, 30th, or 31st.

Nah, I think we were close to breaking 100 last Friday... at least got up in the 90s for sure. Might break a record this coming Friday, though!

Does anyone know if FPA's find out the same day we do, or typically a few days in advance? If none of them have heard anything yet and they're generally in the know a few days beforehand, they probably would have heard something by now if we all hear back this Thursday or Friday. But maybe they find out the same day we all do?
