  1. They say they will post notification letters online on March 14th at 12pm.  Very specific.

Painting , I pretty much know I'm going to vcu as its my first choice/dream school - but am curious about upenn since in past years it seemed people were notified earlier, although it doesn't look like anyone has said anything this year!

  2. There was a thread a little bit back about VCU applicants whose portofolio had been reordered in wierd ways through the supplemental site.

I contacted them and they are letting me change it back.

I would do the same if you are worried about it.

Did it seem that they were aware of it? It was never brought up in my interview - so I figured they were aware / not a big deal. Mine is reordered in a way that a detail image is first and some of the other details are far away from the original piece - so I figured it would be obvious that the ordering had been messed up in some respect.

  3. I logged into my VCU application yesterday to look at the portfolio I submitted and saw that the images were out of the order I had sequenced them in. I thought I had gone over the portfolio dozens of times and sequenced it carefully. I don't want to believe that I botched the most important part of the application. Has anyone else applying to VCU experienced this? Is it possible that they were reordered by the reviewers?

I have experienced this is as well, and was somewhat confused for a moment. I'm assuming / hoping that wasn't the way it was seen while in review. But who knows.

  4. Im wondering if interview notifications come through email or phone or mail as i am having a snail mail crisis. My mail lady went on vacay and lost the key to my building, they havent been delivering mail for 2 weeks now and they werent planning on telling us either. I had to call the post office to see whats up. This might be my weirdest experience with a municipal force.

  5. You might be interested in Douglas crimps the end of painting and Thomas Lawson's last exit:painting. Both short articles that deal with paintings death at the start of the post-modern. Tuymans paintings need to be painting - which is why they are so successful

  6. (Posted before I finished writing)

I'm a fan of the minimal website, I only post my current body of work, and rarely anything older than a two years. So with those opinions I would still say theres nothing wrong with hobbies! The "satisfaction" of painting probably helps to cultivate that machismo attitude towards painting throughout history into post-post-modernity. I would just keep it off the professional website and maybe unto a tumblr or fb page instead.

  7. I know exactly what you mean, I'm a "painter" but I'm working within what I consider to be the end of painting (a la Steven parrino), therefore I limit myself from using paint materials to move away from what you mentioned about the strange self-indulgent nature of painting. My work is pretty sculptural in order to invade the space of a painting - that being said when I see painting I think a lot about its meaning, whether it needs to be painted - if it's relevant. Looking at your website I was confused by the difference between mediums , I'm a fan

  8. p.s. Just saw page two of the painting page, maybe you are invoking Tuymans? Maybe omit the ballpoint drawings, the two paintings of people on the second page are stronger - maybe it just needs a statement/context. I would be interested to know the conceptual values behing the paintings!

  9. Your sculptures outshine the painting/drawing section greatly. I looked at the paintings first and thought it lacked professional attitude - they read as sketches or copies of online images of celebrities. To give the benefit of the doubt they be invoking Luc Tuymans, but its a stretch to insinuate that. Your sculptures carry a completely different tone, are photographed nicely, are interesting and conceptual. If I were you I would omit the painting/drawing section from your website, especially since its not your main dig!

  10. Hey guys- I saw that some of you were having trouble with the VCU application. I'm having some trouble with this as well.

I noticed that in the "first" application, the university portion of the application, there were essay questions asking you about why you were applying to grad school now and things of that nature. Is this where you put your personal statement? Since I haven't yet submitted that portion, I haven't gotten to the art-specific portion which I guess I will be prompted to complete next.

Those essay questions just threw me off and I'm not sure if I should submit my personal statement there, or if it will ask for it in the second portion of the application.

    Any help is appreciated!

I'm applying to painting at VCU, which asked for an artist statement in place of a SOP, I called to ask if what you enter in the first half needs to be the same as the second and the woman I spoke to said it should be the same thing. So, I just uploaded my one-page artist statement, that I will be uploading to the supplemental materials as well. I found it confusing that some of the fine arts progrmas were asking for a SOP and others an artist statement, hoping it didnt need to be some sort of weird fusion of the two.

  11. I cannot believe I got the Yale app in yesterday. I am applying to 10 schools. VCU's system is giving me a hard time with recommendation requests though, has anyone else experienced that? I feel so much better now that one app is in! the rest should be easy.... now to the fun waiting part!

Yes! They havent sent me the supplemental materials link after i paid and subbmitted the common app... everyones on vacation until tomorrow. Did you get that link?
