Indiana University vs. Purdue Speech Pathology
tchris replied to bethany1222's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hello, I don't have much advice regarding the particular schools, but I do have some on the thought that "GA position would look good on job applications." I was considering the possibility of a GA position and also thought it would be helpful in getting a job after graduation. I reached out to one of the SLPs I shadowed and asked her advice about what factors she thought were most important when deciding. She said that what helped her most in securing a job out of grad school was her clinical experiences and recommendations from clinical supervisors. Having research experiences was beneficial, but really only mattered for pursuing a PhD. For me, the best decision was to forgo the possibility of a GA position because I wanted to be able to focus on my clinical placements. I was afraid that I would pile my plate too high with a GA on top of classes and clinic. This was the best personal decision for me, and the GA position might be really beneficial to you. I just wanted to share some info that I thought was helpful in making a decision. -

Well that's good. I posted it there on Sunday but I think it may have been drowned out by other notifications. I may wait until closer to April 15 when more people have decided where they're going. Aside from that, it looks like I might be in a cohort of 1

I'm wondering about this too. I've never made one before, but I tried my hand at making one for UGA. It's just lonely old me in there for the past few days, so I'm wondering if I did something wrong. Or, maybe nobody has decided to go to UGA yet. Could somebody else take a look to see if mine works?

Living Arrangements in SLP Grad School
tchris replied to Bcjami's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hello! Just thought I'd share my 2 cents on roommates since my former living situations have run the gamut. I've lived with good friends and regretted it and I've also found some great roommates on Craigslist. If I were going to have a roommate during grad school, I would prefer to be with another SLP or grad student. I would recommend against living with an undergrad, mostly from looking back on how I was when I was an undergrad. However, I think the person's study of choice is less important than making sure your living styles match and you have the same idea of what is acceptable regarding noise, mess, friends, boyfriends, pets, and other potential points of contention. The last question about how much to spend vs. the quality/location is important. My first apartment was pretty cheap and I figured I would be fine with the location and lack of space. I was miserable. It seems like when you're apartment hunting you have to find a good balance among price, location, and size/cleanliness. For me, I normally prioritize price and size/cleanliness over location, meaning I would rather have a less expensive place a little farther away that is nice enough for me to feel comfortable. I find that if you're willing to compromise on one of the factors, you can usually find something that you like. -
Which school are you attending in the fall & why?

Thanks, MaxSLP. I am relieved to have made the decision. I look forward to the job opportunities and hope that when my boyfriend and I do move, one of our jobs will be paying for it! -
Which school are you attending in the fall & why?
tchris replied to kbell's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'll be going to the University of Georgia. I initially planned on getting as far away from Georgia as possible, but UGA ended up being the best choice for me. 1. In-state tuition 2. Local program so my boyfriend and I won't have to move 3. Great opportunities for clinical placement in Athens & Atlanta 4. Small program size 5. I got a great feeling from the faculty and students when I went to visit -

Question about Accepting an Offer

That's my understanding, too. That goes for any offers with financial aid. If there is no financial aid, I don't think you need a written release. -

Dream school vs. affordable local school
tchris replied to Nala's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm facing this dilemma, too, and I'm leaning towards the local school. For a while I had my heart set on picking up and moving my boyfriend and myself across the country, but I think that'll have to wait. I'm hoping that if we do end up moving after school, one of our jobs will be paying for it! I just can't stomach the extra tens of thousand in loans when there's a great program just down the road. Another major consideration for me is we would like to buy a house and start a family a few years after graduating. Securing a mortgage with so much outstanding student loan debt would be difficult with such an unfavorably balanced debt to income ratio. -
So, how many of you are musicians?
tchris replied to AMKersh's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm bilingual but have absolutely no musical talent -
One of the main reasons I did a second bachelor instead of just the prerequisites was so I could get federal student loans. As far as I know, students are only eligible for federal funding if they're degree seeking, so that made my decision for me. I don't think it would be a decision for acceptance unless you didn't do well or didn't compete all the required courses.

I see that some waitlist emails went out today. Is anybody still waiting to hear from Temple?
