Carnegie Mellon MA
MariElizabeth replied to MariElizabeth's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm interested in ecocriticism and gender studies, so I really appreciate your advice on obtaining a course list for next year, seeing as how there may be little opportunity for me to refine my interests. -
After emailing the English graduate department, I was informed that initial offers have been made, and as students opt to go elsewhere, there may be a few more offers, but it is pretty unlikely that I would be hearing any good news in the coming weeks. The person I spoke to was very kind, and fortunately now I can stop compulsively checking my mail/email! So, here hoping that the last few spots go out to some of you!

AndroMache, thank you for your insight! I, too, am worried about the one year length, and am torn between CMU and a two year program. What is your intended specialty or area of interest? -

I wasn't able to attend the open house, unfortunately. I'm pleased to hear you mention that Masters students seem equipped to apply for the PhD upon completion of their degree. Did you have any other impressions? Do the MA students work with PhD students? -
One Year Masters Query.

May I ask which school? I notice we have been accepted to a few of the same ones. Also, congrats! -
I'm curious if there are any current /post CMU MA students on here who could provide their opinions of the program, specifically, PhD prospects, satisfaction with the one-year duration, professors, ect. While I have received offers from BU, CU boulder, SUNY Buffalo, and Brandeis ( all of which fall into the dreaded non, or partially funded category) CMU is my best option financially, so any information about the culture of the school would really help with the decision making process. Thank you!

I know! They are my last school to hear from and I want to start making final decisions and plans. I'm thinking it will be a rejection for me as all, but there has only been two postings on the results board.

Now have either of you hear from Penn State?

Thoughts on one-year MA programs?

Can you extend a one year program? -
Helloooo. As this incredibly stressful application season comes to an end I find myself choosing between a few partially funded masters programs. One program is only one year, which seems far to brief to make proper relationships with professors, cultivate a strong PhD application and what not. I'm wondering if it is possible to ask about extending the masters for at least another semester, while maintaining full-time status (which the scholarship is contingent upon). Is this an outlandish request? Blarg.

Those who have heard from CU boulder regarding the PhD program, particularly those who were offered consideration for the Masters program, do you have any idea when MA applicants will be contacted?

"Decision Made" Torture Pending.

Hey, I'll bet you're about to receive some good news from Minnesota! So cheers to that! -

It says that we will be notified within one business day after the status has been updated to "decision made." -
As of this morning the application status has been changed to Decision Made for University of Minnesota. Does this necessarily mean an early rejection, or potential waitlist? And yes, It seems i do have to neurotically postulate this matter for the 24hours before I know for sure. Any Ideas on what the timing of decisions means for acceptance?

BowTieAreCool, Do you have any insight regarding the schools I've applied to? Out of my reach? -

Oof, I really thought the math portion wouldn't matter much for English literature programs. -

Should I have applied to lower-level schools? GRE verbal: 168 GRE writing :4.5 GRE math :142 (embarassing) cGPA: 3.69 English GPA: 3.79 I know how important other factors, such as the SOP and writing sample are to the application but I just want to get an idea of where I stand otherwise.
