  1. Hi everyone!

Posting here is bringing back a lot of memories of College Confidential forums...I still have trouble believing I'm already applying to PhD programs! I'm looking to pursue theoretical syntax, with a particular focus on Slavic languages. I'm also interested in field work with minority languages, so depending on where I end up I may branch out into morphosyntax of languages of the Caucasus or Siberia/Far East of Russia. In terms of specific research interests, right now I'm getting really into case theory and concord, and my senior honors thesis will be focused on that. I'm also into certain aspects of psycholinguistics, particularly how we can use experimental techniques to inform syntactic theory.

Consider applying to Harvard if you're interested in fieldwork, languages of the Caucasus, and using experimental techniques to inform syntactic theory!

  2. I don't think that means a rejection, I'd rather consider it being tantamount to 'short-listed'. I had an interview with them two weeks ago, and they haven't got back to me yet. Additionally, from what I know, they don't necessarily do interviews with all the candidates they are considering. So I'd take your status (and mine) for what it looks like - 'pending'.

Thank you very much for the information! I was thinking that it might mean I'd be on the waitlist, since at least two people were admitted already, but there's a good chance that they haven't decided yet if there are three of us in this situation on this forum.

  3. Is there anyone who has heard nothing at all from UMass Amherst? I feel like a lot of people have already been rejected or admitted, but my status on the website up until this morning (the site is down right now) was "applied", and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to consider that a rejection.

  4. I don't think rankings are a perfect reflection of acceptance rates. While the two are obviously somewhat correlated, I'd be interested in knowing which programs have had the lowest acceptance rates in recent years and what those rates are.

  5. Someone from Harvard just called to change the time of my interview. I somehow ended up asking if she could tell me how many other people will be interviewed, and she said "of course not". Now I feel terrible for asking, but was my question really that bad? I just want to understand if they are interviewing all the candidates that they are considering admitting or if there's something wrong with only my application.
