  1. I applied late to PTS MDiv (got in just under their REAL cut off) and was wondering what folks have heard about funding. I know it's usually very generous but I wasn't sure how the recession has affected what they are able to offer.

And while we're on the subject, any mommy's with babes working towards the MDiv at PTS want to chime in on their experience? I'm feeling a bit of cold feet all the sudden....

  2. What's the deal with UVA, anyone heard anything? I applied to TEC and am waiting to hear back.

    As per UVA:

I don't know if it's poor form or what, but I gave in and emailed a prof with whom I've been in contact:

Couldn't tell me anything officially but they made 3 offers and are waiting for responses before they make more decisions. Budget outlook is bleak for any further admits. Yuck.

  3. This looks like a good place to vent..... Venting begins:

I know some of us are naturally gifted at standardized testing. The rest of us have to take prep courses. And buy books. And make multiple attempts at getting the other-than-hard-science long reading section.

I know a lot of folks who were quite successful on the GRE with all these steps taken even after bombing the GRE first time around. So is it just a toll you have to pay? And what if you can't fork over $1000 for the course and $450 for 3 attempts? Makes me a little suspicious about who is being kept out.

Speaking of those kept out: first ever African-American woman was admitted to the Duke PhD in ethics this year.

  4. There isn't a whole lot to share, I'm afraid. The email said there were 100 applicants and only 8 spots open. It didn't indicate how many others had been waitlisted or how those might be arranged hierarchically or in relation to the different funding packages that are typically offered.

We'll just have to wait and see, I guess. I suppose it all makes for good Lenten discipline. :)

Anyone actually get in? Did they call?

  5. Not a lot of info on the results page about UVA from years past. Their deadline was so early so I had hoped to hear something around this time. Anyone know any more details about when UVA will likely send out results?

I was wondering the same thing. Didn't appear on too many lists that I saw. My impression was that, regardless of the deadline, the committees don't really get to work until they return for the spring semester. But who knows.

  6. I'm pretty sure that BC hasn't notified anyone yet....

Don't despair....it's still early in the game, and I think you applied to several places, right? All it takes is one!

    Indeed:

    Vandy

    Emory

    BC

    Fuller

    Virginia

    Duke (ThD)

The ThD is the one in which I'm most invested (I'm Duke MA and my sis is currently MDiv). I've also been accepted to Eastern Mennonite Seminary with the potential for funding, dependent upon a scholarship process. It's nice to have a "yes" out there! But I'm looking forward to this all being over.

Any one know the skinny on UVA? Their app deadline was Dec 2!

  7. Positives, perhaps but maybe not?

-Christian College, not Wheaton, magna cum laude (the magna part, at least)

-BA in Biblical and Theological Studies

-non-degree coursework in ancient languages and theology at a seminary and Catholic university

-A.M. from the Religion Dept at Duke

    -great references

-a topic that a few advisors have shown interest in

-proficiency in Hebrew, background in Greek, Spanish, and German

    Negatives, or weird things

-My degree at Duke was a 2 year degree. I thought I wanted to go into the area of early Judaism / Christianity but realized half way through I was much more interested in theology. Audited several classes, went on to take more theology coursework. Oh my kingdom to go back and do the MDiv. There is a lot of overlap between Religion and Div at Duke. Will the AM be a negative?

-The first year at Duke, the Religion Dept was still on a non-traditional grading system. They only had 3 grades, something like E, A, and G. The second year they switched over to regular grades. So I have no GPA. And my transcript looks CRAZY! weird, weird, weird.

-610 verbal. I know most programs say the cutoff is 600 but in reality they toss anyone under 700. Retake? I'm sure you'll say retake. But....

    Other considerations

-I'm a stay at home mom now. The app process is already a financial toll on my family. There will be no getting an extra degree to boost my appeal. I'm going to apply this year, and that's it, not because I don't want it badly, but because my family can't be in limbo for multiple years.

-I'd like to use my degree in the service of the L'Arche community, both as a pastoral presence and writing about what we do. Fuller and Duke ThD feel like the best fit for this reason. I'm much more interested in going to a place that best prepares me for the work of thinking and expressing theology of disability than just getting in somewhere. Because of this I'm thinking about nixing Vandy, BC, and possibly Emory from my list and sticking to only Virginia, Fuller, and Duke. Thoughts?

    Final thoughts

-Do programs have an interest in older, non-traditional, mama students? Or is the committee blind to these kinds of demographics?

This is probably too long to hold anyone's interest but at least it was cathartic.....
