  1. Berkeley is still my top choice despite the budget problems. I do wonder how much the cuts affect grad funding versus the much publicized undergrad tuition.

Democracy Now! reported that with last week's decision by the board of regents "graduate students may have to pay for programs that were currently free." Sounds pretty ambiguous, but also pretty crappy... My guess is we'll find out after the 1st of the year what department budgets will look like.

  2. Hi,

I have found a lot of information on the quality of Sociology programs and their rankings for U.S. schools, but I am also considering applying to McGill University and University of Toronto. Does anyone have any idea how those programs are or where the might be a ranking of Canadian schools?

I'm especially interested in qualitative or ethnographic research and its use in welfare and health policy, so any US school suggestions would also be welcomed!

    Thanks.

I asked my advisor about McGill, as they have a program that would suit me quite well, and he suggested that they are like a Canadian Harvard. I spoke with a friend who lived in Canada for ten years or so, and her impression was similar--that McGill is Canada's top university. I've heard Toronto is up there to; maybe in the top five amongst Canadian schools.

  3. Hello all,

I am wondering if any of you can, off the top of your head, note programs within the US that have a strong emphasis in poststructuralist theory, or schools that have faculty members whose area of interest includes poststructuralism. Most of this work seems to be conducted in the UK, which is unfortunate for Americans, since we have little shot at funding.

    Thanks!
