I am will be starting in the Fall to! I am Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (PhD). I have never been to anywhere in the US apart from Boston I have lived all my life in the UK so looking forward to the experience! What are peoples opinion of the area? Anyone know how expensive things are (especially beer)?

I have been briefly speaking with my POI at Duke MEMS and she said "the committee is pretty tight lipped until the end of FEB." which is sad and I am not a huge fan of waiting
