  1. Cool, I sent in my acceptance to BU. I'm looking forward to a change of scenery from my current school. I hope that finding housing isn't too painful. I don't know much about the Boston area either.
  2. I just accepted an offer from Boston University for CS PhD. I will be joining their computer vision group. I am glad this long and painful process is finally over.
  3. Anyone else considering going to BU? I think I am fairly likely to attend. (Computer Vision)
  4. I haven't heard anything from Georgia Tech, UCSD, or UCSB.. I have an admit that i need to reply to by April 15th... I tried emailing and phoning these schools but they haven't responded. What am i supposed to do ? Or a more important question what was the point of applying to a school that doesn't get back to you? Also if i was wait-listed wouldn't it have been logical to notify me..
  5. Hey all! I was wondering who else is considering the school? I think Boston would be a pretty awesome environment to be in. I am going for a computer science phd. It seems like BU is more well known for some of the liberal arts. Anyways, any thoughts are welcome...
  6. I still haven't heard anything from: Georgia Tech, Johns Hopkins, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, U Texas at Austin. I wonder if at this point in the game its fair to assume I have been rejected or not..
  7. I am still waiting to hear from . Johns Hopkins (ECE) , Umaryland (CS) , Boston Univ (CS), UCSD (ECE), UCSB (ECE), Georgia Tech (ECE), Utexas Austin (ECE), all for computer vision / image processing related research. Just out of curiosity how did the people in this thread first get interested in computer vision. Also have you found a particular area within computer vision that you want to specialize in (ie. tracking, registration, segmentation... etc) or are you more general?
  8. I don't know much about lehigh but can talk for penn state. In terms of the school i think its pretty well known and respected. Certainly a lot of major companies come and recruit at psu. As for computer vision research there is one group in the CSE dept that does that. One of the people Dr. Collins is a great professor and from what i know a good researcher. There is also Yanxi Liu who does vision / pattern recognition type work. So overall i don't think penn state has the most options for your area, but they do exist.
  9. I am interested in computer vision and applied to a lot of phd programs. so far i have been rejected from cornell, upenn, and mit. i got into univ central florida. i plan to complete a m.s this spring and from there see whether i want to stay where im at or go elsewhere. yeah that sums it up for now. also, does anyone else not care as much about where they end up? as long as the advisor is good?
  10. Cool, I applied to mostly EE or ECE programs but a few CS as well. My field is computer vision and image processing. I have applied to 12 programs, but have not heard from any yet.
  11. 1.) I submitted an Application for phd compsci at cmu, and when i re-uploaded my resume it changed the size field. However when i clicked a link to view the resume it didn't update to the one i uploaded. No matter how many times i reuploaded my resume and saved, only the size field would change, but it seems like the link to view the upload didn't update. I submitted...because it was only a minor resume change... 2.)For GaTech application. Please provide a brief statement outlining your financial needs, skills and strengths for our consideration in making financial awards. Do not duplicate information provided in the Statement of Purpose below or resume. There is no place on the application for submitting a resume!!! I guess i should call them. Also what kind of stuff are they looking for here? I mean i wont be able to afford doing a phd unless it is funded, what else are they really looking for financial needs wise? Thanks
  12. Background: I did my undergrad at a public university in electrical engineering, and at the end of my senior year i took computer vision as an elective. I thought it was a pretty fun area and decided to stay for a masters (in ee department) at the same school (focus on computer vision). Since then i am on my third semester as a grad student finishing up course work and focusing on research next semester. Thus far i have taken all the computer vision courses that were offered and i began doing research this last summer (in computer vision / image processing), although i still haven't done anything too substantial as course work has been a priority. Desire: Since i like computer vision and it turns out computer vision is generally in the computer science departments, i am planning to apply to compsci programs for a phd. Some schools say they recommend the cs gre subject test. I have not taken this, and at the moment my background in areas like operating systems, computer architecture, and advanced programming are lacking or non existent. I am currently taking an algorithms course which has forced me to learn some additional programming and discrete math on my own. Currently i am reading a c++ book on the side, but i dont have a ton of experience with the advanced programming concepts. Thus if i did take the gre cs exam i would probably do poorly. Irregardless i think i could handle computer science topics without too much trouble provided i took a few introductory courses (hopefully these would be sufficient for any candidacy exams i would need to take.) *note from my experiences so far in computer vision courses i have used a ton of matlab. also i have informally seen stuff like dynamic programming and graph algorithms in the vision courses. Questions: a.) How badly will not having cs gre hurt my chances, will the fact that i did ee as undergrad/ms help or hurt my chances? b.) Should i focus on applying to schools that have at least several people doing research in computer vision? c.) With all the different labs and professors who do research, how do i go about finding the one i want to work with. Or in particular the one i will mention in the application / statement of purpose. My interests in the area are still somewhat broad (tracking,registration,reconstruction,segmentation..) So choosing person / lab a over person / lab b is hard. Its not like one particular research topic stands out a lot more than others. Should i start reading research papers and seeing if i find that particular problem cool? Is there any reason to send emails to professors, ie asking if they will be looking for phd students? d.) What are my chances for schools like, cmu, ucla, mit, umaryland, hopkins, usc. had about a 3.6 for undergrad gpa, about a 3.85 for masters. about 760 math gre, 580 verbal, 4.5 writing. should have 2 really solid letters (one may have a bigger presence in the computer vision field) Third letter should be good. Research, i did research this past summer, and have slowly been working on it since (taking courses has slowed me down.) I plan to do most of my research next semester. Sadly this isn't so great for admissions. I haven't published anything most likely because i haven't done anything great yet. Mostly simulations, collecting data, still in progress. Ive also had several internships, but i dont think admissions would care much. lastly any general advice would be appreciated, especially from others pursuing computer vision. Thanks
