  1. Hey..! HAHA Looks like we will meet at champaign. I am also heading back to UIUC for my MA studies in EAS. How about others? where are you all going to be this Fall?
  2. Ah, I see, Thank you so much for your feedback, and yes I am (for now) planning on going to phd program after pursuing my masters. Modern korean history would be my focus i hope, and there is a high chance that I would utilize anthropoligical discipline to study korean history. I mean, there are modern chinese and japanese historians too in the department so i wouldn't miss out (too) much on modern history of east asia in general. So yes, like you suggest, I also think not that many offers can beat the one UIUC has offered me. I guess you're right that I shouldn't really choose a program based on one or two faculty, but then again,, I just never had a chance to take modern history course taught by the ones i admire in the field (namely, Carter Eckert and Cumings) so I guess this is what keeps bothering me to even put MAPSS into my consideration despite the clear reality that going to MAPSS will certainly load me with student loans. Still waiting on two more schools, but I think I would probably get rejected or admitted with very limited or no funding.. so I think those two will most likely the all available options i woudl have Thanks again though!
  3. Grats all who have received more admissions! Mastershoping congrats again for your additional acceptance news! Can I ask you a question if you don't mind ? I actually received offer from MAPSS yesterday; but funding isn't really great for this (only 1/3 tuition) How do you think of the program..? I am still leaning more toward accepting UIUC MA offer (full funding + TA) the thing is UIUC does not have Korean historian, but only one koeran anthropoligist (but very well known in academia) with whom i have worked for almost 2 years of my undergrad.. Only reason that i am considering MAPSS despite the substantial lack of finanancial aid is Bruce Cumings, as his previous research seems greatly fit to my interest as well... Do any of your MAPSS friends have him as their thesis advisor? I really would want to know what kind of person he is as a mentor/advisor Thanks!
  4. my case was that i was just notified by email, with letter included. no advisor contacted me beforehand and i am guessing that is because i applied as MA candidate. but yea, i agree with saltome that they are still sending out the decisions
  5. hey saltome, congrats to you too and wish you the best luck for berkeley! I guess there is a chance we might be see each other at uiuc haha. Thanks mastershoping! , and yes, i really wish i had some more time to apply to those schools as well (esp schools on west coast) by the way I fully agree that winter at illinois could be overwhelming sometimes..just been through one snowstorm a month ago xD
  6. Congrats on those who heard their adimissions! I just got an offer from UIUC - (EALC MA), so anyone who has applied there should hear soon. still waiting on harvar / columbia like many of you tho.. good luck to you all!
  7. Thanks Tomoe! Yes that is why i wish to get into columbia haha, and good luck to you too!
  8. Hi mastershoping, thanks and good luck to you too! Yea i heard about MAPSS from my graduate friends at UIUC (where i recently graduated), both postive and negative feedbakcs haha. I guess you've already taken courses from Cumings? (so jealous!) what part of modern korean history are you interested in? mine is rather broad at this point, but mostly interested in political and transnational ones. btw, are you guys all planning on applying for FLAS ?
  9. Do MA programs also interview candidates? didn't know about this website until now, and it is great to see that there are other people applying to EAS programs! I have applied to MA in columbia EALAC, harvard, UIUC, and Uchicago (MAPSS), focusing on modern korean history. wish i had more time to apply to schools in westcoast, but deadlines were too tight in there ;x
