  1. You're telling me.

I'm in Chicago today, going to be helping facilitate workshops at CAA2014. Kinda frustrated because Northwestern and UIC are high on my list and I don't have interviews and wasn't invited to that visit weekend. I went to the aquarium by myself and watched the beluga whales. I think it's really important to take your mind off of this all if you can, especially with all the bad news we've been having.

Anyone who's in Chicago feel free to come check out our UncommonCommons sessions. They're free to the public (you don't have to be a member to attend our workshops/screenings).

    Thanks Nate!

Wish I could attend, I am in New Orleans now.

I think you definitely have chance to get in UIC or NW because of your work experience. UIC emphasizes a lot on technology, their dean is very charismatic in person!

Also, I think neither open house nor interview is a decisive factor for you being accepted into a program.

In my case, I was skyped-interviewed by Penn State's eight admission committee members for like 40 minutes, but I was never asked to their open house.

I have know fellows that were asked to open house but never interviewed. Also, I know phd friends there who were never interviewed or asked to open-house. They also told me interview and open house didn't mean anything at this point; the process is confusing in nature.

You are definitely right! We need to distract ourselves as possible as we can. But it has been raining all day down here!

  2. Hey everyone!

I too am quite enjoying the waiting game...and by enjoying I mean quietly dying inside and checking my mail daily even though I know most decisions are at least a month away.

Nate - To answer your question, I guess much of the decision for me came down to a few things:

A ) What can you do with an MA? (depends on your interests/program)

B ) Do you want to teach?

For my specific situation, getting an MA in Political Comm (depending on the program) isn't the worst idea in the world if I wanted to enter the political arena and look towards working in Washington or elsewhere (state politics). But at this point, I'm unsure whether I want to commit to a PhD program straight out of undergrad. I enjoy the idea of teaching, but have no idea whether I want to spend the next 5-7 years of my life in a rigerous program and end up wishing I hadn't. Additionally, my GRE scores weren't as high as I would have liked, and applying to MA programs allows me to work my way up without having to retake it. I plan on going to a good program and doing well, and hold off on making my final call until I have a better idea of what graduate school is like and whether I think a PhD is for me.

Does anyone have any idea when UW-Madison (Mass Comm) or UT-Austin (Comm Studies) are going to start notifying people? Their applications were due the earliest for me (Dec 15th), so I'm thinking that they should be among the first to let us know.

    Totally agree!

Hey, I have a friend who applied for Both Madison and UT-Austin last year. Austin came out the very end of Jan, and Madison was at the mid Feb.

  3. The transcripts were University of Colorado - Boulder. The department took unofficial ones I emailed them today and told me to send official ones to the graduate school asap. I actually think that might have been my error after chatting with the admissions people. If I understand them correctly, they do not take unofficial ones even prior to being accepted, so that is probably what happened.

The letters of recommendation were both from University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. Both of my professors confirmed that my eyes had not deceived me when I checked prior to the application deadline. Both were allowed to resend them.

I found both errors just by checking the application portals to see if any decisions had been made for me. I had checked all of my applications in late November, when I finished them, and all of them were complete at the time. No idea what happened between the past week and then that stuff wasn't included anymore.

For the Colorado one, it looks like an indication of accepting to me =P Congrats!

For UNC, as long as they let you fix it, I think you are good.

Don't think these two of the errors will screw up your applications.

  4. Has anyone else been having problems with their applications being screwed up after completion? For two different schools I have had errors that I am 100% sure I didn't make. One application said that I submitted no transcripts, and the other said that two of my LORs did not submit their documents. I checked both these applications prior to the deadline and they were correct, but now as I watch for admissions decisions I'm finding these errors.

I'm wondering if it's a web browser issue? One school used the applyyourself program and the other did not. Either way, both schools allowed me to give them the documents, but my imagination is running rampant on how bad these two errors have hurt my chances of getting into both schools.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

Which are those two schools? How did you find out?

I mean, if the school didn't contact you regarding the errors, you are supposed to be fine. :)

  5. Hi!

This is Elvan from Turkey. I applied for Communication PhD programs for fall 2014 (many in USA and one in Canada).

I only got an email from a professor of UW Madison for an interview so far but we still did not arrange the time for the Skype interview. I just wanted to check if anyone heard from the schools on my list.

Any one hearing from the schools listed below? (It is more than welcomed if you tell your past experiences/the dates you got an acceptance for these these programs.)

    Northwestern University

    USC Annenberg

University of Michigan at Ann Arbor

    Washington University

    UW Madison

    University of Illinois at Chicago

University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

    University of Maryland

    McGill University

Good luck to everyone waiting for an offer!

I know University of Maryland had their interviews before Christmas.

Other schools you list usually have results out during Feb.

  6. I just went to their recruitment/interview weekend, but from what I heard, last year they did accept a few people without interviewing, generally before the weekend. Then again the visit is earlier this year too, so I can't be certain. I'm sure that you can email or call them right now and ask to get a specific answer.

before the recruitment weekend? ugh....hope that doesn't mean that I am automatically rejected....

    Thanks  for the information =D

  7. I submitted my last application today after a fair dose of procrastination.

As soon as I finished with it, I grabbed my phone which I had silenced so as not to distract me into further procrastination. What do I see on there? An email notifying me of induction to my second major department's honor society. Would have looked nice and schnazzy on my CV. Oh well.

    That's pretty awesome!!!!
