I would say Cornell for academia and UCSB for industry... I think UCSB is slightly better than Cornell in MSE, but Cornell is a much better school in overall. Both have great nanoscience facilities. You would be much happier at UCSB and more depressed at Cornell, but a Cornell degree would be more prestigious I guess.. It really depends on how you feel about both, but at the end, both are really good schools. Here at Cornell, MSE is not really big, they are mostly dominated by electrical eng. and applied physics, but the engineering school in overall is pretty good for nanoscience and fabrication.
