Baltimore isn't a very dangerous city. Like every big city on earth, there are just some places I wouldn't go at night. Just try for a middle of the range apartment and you'll be fine!

    Thanks so much :)

So, you are a Fulbright hopeful coming from Egypt hoping to study in MD? From my experience with the US Fulbright, they have a searchable database with the value of the grant. So for UK partnership Fulbrights, they typically pay for whatever cost of tuition and provide a ~13,000 USD living grant, which is enough to not necessarily have to work there, but obviously not enough for a lavish stay either.

For Baltimore there are some cheap areas, but that is also a very dangerous city.

  3. Hola, fulbrighters from around the world. I have a question. Do anyone of you know whether the fulbright pays enough stipends to cover renting a house, food, clothes, and transportation??? ^_^ The city I am most probably heading to is Baltimore, Maryland and its quite expensive :o Any help??? I do not wanna go there and work as a cadger rather than a student ?

  4. :D Hello there, we are in the same position but the difference is that I am located in Egypt. I am in the same "Wonderful" position (Sarcastic tone) :D I asked the Fulbright for feedback regarding the universities and they told me we do not provide any kind of regular feedback. What's more interesting is that I asked a previous fulbrighter, he told me that they do not provide you with information regarding your acceptance or rejections. Just when they place you in a school, then you would know that you have been accepted in it! other than that No you don't get the chance to know anything :D:D:D P.S I am freaking out as well and I want to call the school so bad :(

Judging by your posts, I think you need to first make a decision on what is more important for you: either getting into an ivy league (or other "prestigious") school or getting into a school that stands out in your field and will prepare you for what comes next.  The Fulbright committee in the end is going to choose the school that would be the best fit for what you want to study and your goals based on your application.  They also say to be flexible, as almost everyone want to go to an ivy.

Actually it would not have been a problem if I am not interested in a program unfortunately placed in the Ivy league. Don't get me wrong I am from Egypt, and I did not know what columbia was :) I came across this program and then found out that it was at Columbia, which was an Ivy league :) So, it is not about the looks and prestige!

  6. Guys hello, I have a question is this scholarship when deciding the placement is based solely  on the cost? Cause they actually kind of de-motivated us by telling us that Ivy league schools are really expensive and they gave us the feeling that they do not want anyone to be placed at them! I mean schools like Columbia,...etc!

  7. Hello everyone! I need help... concerning the fulbright placement! if there is any previous Fulbrighters I would be grateful to answer the following question. Is the main placement for fulbright is all about the money and how should they place us in a low cost university??? will I have a chance as a fulbrighter at Ivy league schools like Columbia? did it have previous fulbrighters before? cause I have this feeling that it is all about the money somehow? thank you!

  8. Hello guys. I am planning to take GRE test soon. I need to know the BEST books for GRE to get a very high score I mean I want the WHOLE LIST  :D

Another question, How could I improve my TOEFL reading scores? If i got 26 in listening, 27 in both speaking and writing and 22 in READING???? I would really appreciate any help!

    Thank u guys

  9. TAs and RAs are uncommon for masters degrees. I went without assistance for the first semester of my MS. I got a 4.0 that semester and did research for a professor as a volunteer (like 20-30 hours a week). After a semester of that, my department offered me a living stipend and 25% off tuition. As far as I know, I am the only student in the department who was offered this.

If you want a masters degree in the US then you generally have to pay for it, especially when it is in a professional field like marketing. I don't think that approaching professors, asking for money will get you very far. If they decide to pay a masters student to do research then it will probably be a student that they already know from teaching, not someone who emails them who they have never met. From what I have seen, professors perfer to use their grant money towards phd students who will be there for 5 years instead of MS students since by the time they get them up to speed with the lab concepts, they dont have very long to work before they graduate.

Even though funding it uncommon for masters, it does sometimes happen. Certain departments seem better at funding masters students than others. Good luck... I hope you find something!

The problem is that I can go there with a fund of 1 semester but since I am from a developing country, the American Embassy requires that I need to have the entire amount of money to pay for school which is like 50,000 Dollars  :)  Thank you so much

  10. Maybe I am wrong, but my experience is that you don't seek out TA and RA employment offers until you already have an admission offer.

You did the right thing for Columbia where you first ask the school if they have TA/RA and they told you that it's up to each professor. That's good to know, and you should note it down so that you can seek out these opportunities when you get accepted. However, you can't ask the professors now for these positions because they are not going to promise a position to someone who is not yet admitted to their school!

If funding is an issue, you should definitely ask every single school if TA/RA are even possible before applying. Also ask them about when you should apply to the TA/RA positions (sometimes you apply separately, sometimes you apply with the school application). Then, you should apply and wait for responses. Then, you will either get offered a TA/RA along with admission or be instructed to seek out these positions from professors.

You know that is the most helpful tip of advice I have ever received  :)  Thanks a lot Really appreciate it.

  11. Honestly, I am still preparing myself for admission in the fall of 2015. As an international student not being able to travel to see the campuses of the schools, I can't get access to any information. The schools are really really expensive! I got response from Columbia business school to which i considered applying ! they told me yes we do have TA and RA, but each professor has his own criteria, then when I tried to approach the professors there have been no absolutely response. The problem is that the American embassy requires me to identify my funding source before I could get the visa. I don't know whether the professors r rude and unhelpful or I am making mistake in my email format. Thanks :)

  12. Well, I honestly tried to email couple of professors But there have been no response at all. Also the financial aid office is providing no absolute help. As an international student wanting to pursue Master's, I wanna ask ppl who have experience how do I approach professors to get RA or TA as a kind of financial assistance? I honestly felt that the universities do not like saying the kind of assistance they provide to make ppl pay ! I would be forever in debt with any kind of assistance and guidance :)  Thanks

  13. Thank you so much for this advice, but i have a question, how to approach exactly the professors and make them want you? there are hundreds of applicants who have the same GRE, TOEFL, GPA as yourself? Please i would really appreciate it especially i am thinking about applying to PhD program.

  14. I wasn't going to help but.... the tenth z in plzzzzzzzzzzz really sold me.

To be honest however much of what is stated above is the unfortunate reality.  You could consider looking if the university offers a hardship grant, though those tend to have strict requirements and are small in sum.

You might unfortunatly be stuck taking out a loan or having to work part time.

I don't mind working part time but they aren't making it easy either i don't mind having loan and working part time   Do they mention on their website that they have hardship grant? do i ask them after my acceptance or before? Thank you so much  :)

  15. To second the above comment, I don't know of any external grants that you could apply for and hold in advance of your program starting. The timeline is a bit unforgiving here. I would look instead to supplementing my loan income with TA/RA positions through my department. International students can usually also work on campus, so there may be jobs to be found at your school's library or admin offices. It's tough working while in grad school (particularly in the first semester) but it could be an important way to lessen your debt.

I would also urge you to be quite upfront with your department about your funding situation. If your graduate program director (GPD) knows that you're hurting, they may be able to free up loose funds, or nominate you for internal awards. They can also give you advice about which scholarships to pursue over the course of your degree. When contacting them about your situation, however, it is important to write/speak in a very respectful and formal tone. GDPs hate getting (for lack of a better word) really whiny requests about how you need more money. They expect you to understand the risks and challenges of undertaking graduate studies, and really dislike dealing with demanding students with unreasonable expectations.

Here's a sample of what you might write:

    Hello Dr. X,

[small talk about the program and how you're excited to join the department].... However I was hoping to talk with you about the matter of graduate funding. As an international student I am facing several financial challenges in budgeting for the coming years, and while I know that the department's resources are limited, I was hoping that you could let me know if there were any internal opportunities for scholarships, assistanceships, or grants that I could pursue to better support myself financially. If possible, I would also love to know if there are any external grants that past Columbia Msc students (particularly international students) have applied for and won. I'm a little unfamiliar with the funding terrain in the states, and would welcome any information you could offer.

    Many thanks for your consideration,

    Z

I have tried to talk to a professor who is in charge with Msc. Telling him i really really want to get in and i hope to meet you soon and these stuff with alot of respect but he wasn't very much helpful   he is telling me try fullbright and then he said we don't provide any scholarships because it is 12 people program! Duhh  :o  and then when i asked admission office about Work-study they told me Msc is not allowed to get the work study program  :D  it is like saying okay if u will not get a full scholarship u can't get in...... They are not helping at all i wonder what kind of person would afford loan without working at New York city one of the most expensive cities in USA  :)  :)  Thank u 4 responding 2 my post...
