  1. I'm on the same boat.. Not really big schools.

When I was doing my masters I learned that even from 'small' schools there are a lot of great things.

Not to offend anyone but one of my undergrad profs was absolutely terrible (yale phd, bragged a lot too) while profs from smaller schools seem to work even harder because of their 'inferior' academic background.

I'm not applying for composition (studied comp. as undergrad though) but there are some prestigious composition programs around the country that I really can't stand. But I also saw many great composers coming out from 'smaller' programs too. I sometimes wonder if composers are distracted by rigorous academic curriculum at big names and not able to spend enough time on compositions..

I've heard the same thing about some comp programs, Counterpointer. I'm applying for composition DMAs and this is one of my biggest questions about places where I've gotten offers. The only thing to do is talk to current students at places, to see what it's really like. But it's so ironic that composers have no time to compose in their doctoral programs....

  2. Any composers waiting to hear from places?

I know that for some of my schools it's getting close to the "no news is bad news" time frame. That is, I'm pretty sure that at two of the programs to which I have applied usually call or email their chosen candidates in late-January or early February. It's still too early to assume the worst, but if they don't get in touch by February 15th, that most likely means rejection.

Hope everyone's weathering the waiting season well, and that we all get the good news we're hoping for!

    cheers,

    ST

  3. I hope everyone's handling the waiting well so far. I've felt surprisingly relaxed about it all until this week, but now that I know that decisions are likely to come anytime from now on, I'm quite distracted by the whole thing. I've had a bunch of invitations to interview, and one rejection so far, but have yet to get an acceptance.

I thought I'd post here just in the spirit of "misery loves company" - we'll all hear soon, just maybe not soon enough!

    Best of luck to all,

    SirTom

  4.

Can't decide if it's better to lose heart at this point and be surprised by good news, or to keep on believin' just to be let down when the rejections arrive. The schools I've applied to have almost surely already sent out their acceptances, so it's looking like I'll get to do this all over again next year.

    Congratulations princessgesualdodavenosa!

  5. Man, whoever got that email from Julia Wolfe, CONGRATS. That would make my day for sure.

Can't believe there havebeen no composition application results posted for UC Berkeley or Davis yet. Hard to think they haven't already made their decisions.

If anyone has heard of people getting interviewed/accepted into those programs, please share.

    Good luck everyone,

    st

  6. Still no sign of word from any Northern CA UC's for composition. I find it very hard to believe that they haven't sent out acceptances yet, but no one has posted an interview or acceptance. Anyone heard anything?

In other news, Yale sent me (mistakenly) an email with all the necessary info for their DMA entrance exams. Anyone else get one of those?

Congrats to all who have been accepted so far!

  7. Big congrats to those accepted at Chicago!

I too am awaiting results for composition (and preparing myself for probable rejection)... what's the word, composers?

Someone got an interview at USC - that's huge, so congratulations to that person!

I'm also waiting and preparing myself for probable rejections. The hardest part for me now is keeping open that tiny sliver of hope just in case someone requests an interview. But the schools I have left have generally sent acceptances/interview requests in later Jan/early Feb, then rejections in mid-Feb, so I'd be shocked by good news at this point.

    Good luck to everyone!

  8. Stanford has sent out at least some rejections for the DMA in composition. I know 'cause I got one.

Can't tell if I'm really this unsurprised and sanguine about it, or if I'll realize that I'm super-bummed out later on. I think I expected this, but after all the work of applying (not to mention the $125), I'm not sure it's possible to completely believe that a rejection is coming.

I really did have reservations about my musical compatibility with the faculty and fellow students there, anyway, so a part of me agrees with their decision (except, of course, for the incontrovertible FACT of my awesomeness and the related conundrum of how any program could reject me! :-) but life is full of mysteries...).

    Good luck everyone!

  9. Anyone else waiting to hear from Berkeley and/or Davis for composition?

Going by the Gradcafe Results search, it looks like over the last few years, UC Berkeley / UC Davis have sent acceptances/requests for interviews in the last week of January, and rejections in mid-Feb or later. Complete speculation, but it'll be interesting to see if that happens this year.

This is the sort of thing I do when I have to wait.

    Good luck all,

    ST

  10. Hey all,

I, too, am waiting to hear back from music composition programs. I was one of the folks who got a rejection from Yale yesterday, just wanted to say hi, join the conversation, and especially wish everyone luck!
