  1. I sent in my Eastman confirmation today! It was a tough decision, but I'm relieved to have the entire process behind me. Will anyone else be heading to Rochester in the fall? Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances and decisions!
  2. Thanks, music! At the moment, it seems to be between WashU and Eastman, though I certainly wouldn't mind a place off the wait list at Northwestern! You've done spectacularly -- do you know where you'll end up? That sounds really interesting, Eisler! FSU sounds like a great place to study that -- they've got some wonderful American music scholars! Good luck to everyone as things start wrapping up! It's refreshing to be in the homestretch after months of anxiously checking my email and this forum. (Though, granted, this comes with a new kind of stress and anxiety...)

I'm glad! If you have any questions about the city or U of R, feel free to PM me!
  4. Way to go, Eisler! I'm curious, what are your research interests? Florida sounds lovely -- especially this time of year. Congrats!
  5. Eisler, I emailed the department to see what was going on, and they replied that they had already sent out the first wave of acceptances, but that I had been placed on the waiting list -- which is why they hadn't updated my status. It might be worth emailing them as well!
  6. Wow, nicely done Music! You're doing splendidly this admissions season -- congrats!
  7. Hey Eisler! Yeah, there's a page on the main graduate school site that allows you to check your decision status: https://www.gradadmissions.ucla.edu/newapp/Login.asp?topage=AdmissionStatus.asp Good luck!
  8. Hi virtual comrades! I noticed on the results page that a few people had gotten notifications from UCLA (or were emailed and directed to the grad status login page). I haven't heard anything, and when I check the status page it just says "In progress -- pending decision" (or something to that extent). Is anyone in a similar boat? I'm not expecting good news at this point, but that's okay -- I just want a concrete answer!
  9. I hope this week brings lots of acceptances for all of us! Waiting is pretty killer... It's been insanely cold where I am (about -23ºF) recently, so there has been little more for me to do besides check Grad Cafe (from the warmth and safety of my apartment) and hope for updates. Good luck to everyone!

I went to U of R for undergrad, and I actually prefer neighborhoods IN the city. To whomever asked about the White Coat neighborhood -- it's a stone's throw from the med school and maybe a 15-minute walk from campus. Quite nice and quite safe. The Corn Hill neighborhood is right across the river (but a bit closer to downtown) and is very, very nice. It's mostly young professionals and grad students, and there are lots of restaurants, bars, festivals, live music venues, etc. Everyone always points to the 19th Ward as being a terrible place to live, but I don't agree with that. It's a fairly low-income neighborhood, but there are a ton of students and professors who also live there, and as long as you aren't, say, walking around alone at 4:00 am attracting attention, you shouldn't have a problem. The Southwedge neighborhood is close enough to campus where you can get there in fifteen minutes by bike, but far enough away that it feels like its own neighborhood and isn't just students. It's a pretty hip area: lots of coffee shops, local restaurants and bars, art and music festivals, etc. Park Ave is another very nice neighborhood -- probably the most affluent within the city -- and is gorgeous and great for walking. If I were going to U of R for grad school, I'd try to live in either Corn Hill or Southwedge. They're close to campus but also an easy walk from the center of downtown, and rent is affordable. I lived in Corn Hill for a summer and only paid $350 a month for a gorgeous two-story apartment (I shared with two others) right next to a lovely little park where they had live music every Sunday. If anyone has any questions about the Rochester area, feel free to message me! I grew up not too far away, so I'm pretty familiar with the city and surrounding suburbs.
  11. Harmonielehre, I applied to UCLA as well. I haven't heard anything yet, and when I check the decision status login it says that my decision is still pending. Have you heard anything?
  12. Congrats, music, on U Chicago! It seems like you'll have plenty of options when it comes time to choose. And of course, congrats to everyone else as well! Just heard back from Stony Brook -- good news! Anyone know anything about the community there? I live in Siberia, so I probably won't have a chance to visit before April 15, and I'd love to get a better idea of what it's like. Good luck to everyone else waiting! I'm hoping that we'll all hear back from quite a few places this coming week.
  13. Hi Harmonielehre! That was me, actually. They called me on the ninth to ask if I was going to be in the country for the interview weekend (a big part of my CV revolved around an abroad program I'm currently on) because, in their words, they afford could fly me to Chicago from New York, but not from Siberia. Alas, I am still in Siberia, so they asked to do a Skype interview on the tenth. So my interview situation was a bit unorthodox! I know I'm a newcomer to this forum, but good luck to everyone!
