  1. To my SSA cohort:

Maliyazi, thanks for making that last brave call to Jermaine and letting us know the decisions are IN!  I too am a bit confused about why notifications seem to be trickling in. I know in my case it's because of the transcript boondoggle, but it seems it's not just me, so... who knows? CONGRATULATIONS on your alternate selection for the ETA Kenya grant! I really, really hope you end up getting to go! You are so passionate about Kenya and about teaching that it would be nuts for the State Department to ultimately give you a NS! You are the person they talk about all the time on the Fulbright website-- you are an ideal ambassador for a program of cultural exchange and friendship building between nations.

Meupatdoes, I'm so sorry. I was really rooting for you! I thought your proposed project for Ghana was brilliant and inspired! Please, please, don't give that up! It may be a Fulbright another year, it may not be a Fulbright at all, but something just as wonderful! What you do is vitally important, not just for Ghana, but for the world. I know we're all going to be saying "we knew meupatdoes way back when..."  Take time to grieve, then get back up on that horse and keep a'going! I expect great things from you.

mbrefo, I don't know you as well as the others, but I'm glad you came out of "lurker status" to let us know about your alternate status, also in Ghana. Thanks! I can't remember the typical number of grants for Ghana, but here's hoping BOTH you and Meupatdoes make it over there. :-)

jrk2115, congratulations on alternate status for South Africa! All I know of South Africa is the airport in Johannesburg, which in my humble opinion is one of the nicest ones in the world! LOL  I do hope you get to go. We need strong ties to South Africa and I hope you can be a part of that. If, ultimately, you don't go, I encourage you to continue your project and find another way. I'm convinced you will get there!

sweater, I'm sorry your project was not funded. :-(  I know you were SSA, but don't know the country. I do know, however, this isn't the end of the road for you, just a new beginning!  Stay strong!

Other SSA folks out there... let us know! We want to be here for each other, to celebrate or console one another.

So far, SSA is a tough one. Really tough. But I think a dedicated group such as ourselves will find a way to build bridges of friendship with Africa. President Obama said recently that he wants our relationship with African nations to "be one of trade, not one of aid." And I really do think our little group here is going to be a part of that, one way or the other. KEEP THE FAITH!

Thank you so much for your kind words.  I know that it will all work out, yet it is just hard after such a long and anxiety-willed process.  I am happy that I still get to go to Malawi this summer to run a randomized control trial.  So, I am excited for that and for new and inspiring opportunities next year.  :)

I really hope that you get it.

Congratulations to all those selected and condolences to all those these didn't get it.  We can do this.  This does not define our success in life.

    Take care. :D

  2. I'm sorry. :( I know how much it sucks. What country did you apply to?

I applied to Ghana.  SSA notified quite a bit of applicants yesterday.  I am not sure if everyone heard yesterday.

  3. Hello Sub-Saharan applicants!!

I just called IIE and decisions are in! He is putting in the database now, and will try to send it out by the end of the day or early in the morning!

Best of luck everyone! I hope we all get it!!

Oh my god...I am pretty sure I am having heart problems at the moment.  My blood pressure and heart rate just spiked!!! I am soo freaked out now about this email.  I can't believe today or tomorrow will be the day.  The actual day.

    Good luck to everyone!!!

I think I will go to the store and get a cake or something... Otherwise, I am just sitting here waiting for that email.

  4. To those that celebrate Easter, Happy Easter everyone!

You are all wonderful people, and I am very grateful to have your company during this anxiety-ridden period.

Here's to hoping that we have a fruitful next week with tons of good news for everyone!

    Take care everyone!

  5. Let me know how yours goes. I am hoping that they will at least let me turn mine in without the G6PD test. I will call Fulbright again on Monday (and hopefully speak with someone nicer) to see. I know the basics behind why the test is necessary, but I am still crossing my fingers that I do not have to wait weeks for the results before I can upload everything to Fulbright.

There are some rapid diagnostic tests for G6PD.  Depending on your health center/hospital, they might be able to tell you quite quickly.

  6. Question for those of you filling out the med form - did you just go to your primary physician and have him/her fill everything out? This is what I just did. The only thing I had done by someone else was the gyno exam, but he had access to the records.

Also - does anyone know if Indonesia is an area that requires the G6PD? I know that my area is moderate malaria risk according to the CDC. However, when I called Fulbright to get more details about this I was told (quite rudely) to call the Indonesian Consulate. They are closed today for Good Friday. Has anyone found out by any chance?

Good luck to those of you still waiting!

I would imagine that you would need G6PD testing for Indonesia.  On the CDC website, it says this about malaria in Indonesia: "P. falciparum 66%, remainder primarily P. vivax." If you get P. vivax malaria, you can have relapses of the malaria.  The parasites can hide in your liver.  The way that they treat these relapses is through primaquine.  It is referred to as the "radical cure" in malaria literature.  However, you cannot take primaquine if you have G6PD.  Therefore, I would highly suspect that you would need testing.

This is not based on any knowledge from the consulate or fulbright or information from a physician. It is just my personal understanding based on taking wayyyy too many courses on malaria and tropical diseases and writing way too many papers on P. vivax.   :D

  7. Meatupdoes, japaniia, and GnosisExchange, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I'm sitting at my desk literally (for real) in tears reading your kind and comforting words of assurance. I was thinking the opposite...that if I were a non-select they'd want to cross their t's and dot their i's so I couldn't come back later and say they rejected me without even having my official transcripts. But I can see it your way too. I'm guessing it's just one more thing they have to have before they send out notifications. I truly hope this doesn't hold up all the SSA notifications for everyone! I would feel terrible if that happened! The waiting is just getting more stressful by the minute! I was great, fine, cool, right up to about April 10. From there on I've been freaking out a little bit more each day.

I ran some numbers, and this is for full study/research ONLY,  but they get right around 5,000 applications a year and hand out right around 830 or so grants, giving the overall odds of approximately 17%. Interestingly, applicants to Western Europe constitute around 22% of all study/research applicants, and comprise about 29% of grantees. But really, I think looking at your country is a much better gauge of acceptance odds. Of course, you all know I'm just blabbing away, running numbers to get something, anything into my head except that email! But I really, truly thank you so much for your support. You are the only people in the world who would get why I reacted the way I did and I am grateful.

I completely understand.  I also feel like it comes in waves.  I was fine with waiting till like April 15 then my nerves went crazy.  I would not worry about the notifications either.  What happens will happen, and we will meet it when it comes. <--- My attempt to be zen about this entire thing.  :)

  8.

OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!  I CAN'T BREATHE...I LITERALLY...CANNOT BREATHE...I FEEL LIKE I'M DROWNING...I'M DIZZY AND LIGHT HEADED...  YOU GUYS GOTTA HELP ME DECONSTRUCT THIS...

Email from Jermaine an hour ago:

    To:  Deborah Brown,

This is a reminder to please arrange for your official transcript to be sent to IIE as soon as possible. The transcript must be the original, registrar generated transcript and in a sealed envelope when mailed in hard copy. Failure to submit in a timely manner may delay the notification of the next stage of your application in the Fulbright U.S. Student award process.

We are missing the following transcript(s):

PhD degree granting/expected institution (Gonzaga University)

If you have requested the transcript(s), you may want to check with the registrar to verify when they were sent.  Please allow at least 2-3 weeks for the transcripts to reach IIE and be processed.  Also, be sure that the transcripts are clearly addressed to:

    US Student Programs

    Institute of International Education

    809 UN Plaza

    New York, NY 10017

Please contact me if you have any questions.

    MY RESPONSE 30 MINUTES AGO:

    Dear Mr. Jones,

Thank you for notifying me about this! I am horrified. I ordered those transcripts months ago. I have just re-ordered them and payed for overnight delivery. However, the National Clearing House is closed today for Good Friday. They should send them out by Tuesday or Wednesday at the very latest, and you should receive them the following day. I apologize sincerely for this.

I assume since you only mentioned Gonzaga that my other transcripts (University of Washington and Cascadia Community College were received by you?

Thank you again for letting me know about this and giving me the opportunity to correct it. You will receive the transcript as soon as humanly possible.

    Sincerely,

    Debbie Brown

AND YES, I SEE THAT I USED ONE PARENTHESIS WITHOUT THE OTHER!  AAAAARRRRGGGHHH!

Please be honest with me, friends. Have I completely blown it? Did the fact that the National Clearing House somehow bungled my transcript last January just cost me a Fulbright?  Of course, if I don't get it now, I will beat myself up for the rest of my life for the missing transcript! Feedback, PLEASE! :(

While I understand completely your panic and frustration, I actually would not worry about it at all!  I do not think that it would negatively impact your chances at all.

In the email, it says "Failure to submit in a timely manner may delay the notification of the next stage of your application in the Fulbright U.S. Student award process."  This is not implying that it will impact your chances.  It is only saying that you might find out later.

Actually, I might even look at this as a good thing.  SSA apparently already made decisions, right?  They are just getting state department approval. Maybe they are hunting your transcripts down, because you got it.  They wouldn't really care if you were Not Selected, right?  That is just a thought of mine.  Either way, I would not worry about it!!!  Also, regardless of whether or not you are selected, I do not think it depends on this at all.

Also, weren't they going to email us back in Feb if they didn't get our transcripts?  So, its not your fault at all that they only emailed you now!

I understand that this is extremely frustrating and annoying.  However, I would imagine that Fulbright understands that things happens outside of our control.  We can only order transcripts and send them in the fastest way possible.  We cannot control things on the other end.  There are so many things that happen outside of our control, and we can only do what we can.

While it seems like the worse thing ever at the moment, it really isn't.  :D

    Have a good holiday weekend!

  9. Also, for those who applied as ETA and are looking for another back-up opportunity, I got an email today about World Teach.  Apparently, they have opportunities to teach English in other countries that are funded (w/ stipend).  They are accepting application by May 1 for American Samoa.  They have other opportunities also.  I don't really know anything else about it, and I am not applying.  However, I thought it might interest some people.  :D

  10. Found out I am accepted to Denmark! I'm still in shock. Sweden, hopefully you're soon!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!  That is so exciting.  So many of friends studied abroad in Denmark, and they all loved it!!! I hope that you have a GREAT year there!

  11. Has anyone else looked at the Medical Clearance Form?  I don't remember when I was vaccinated.  Do doctors have that information on file?  I've moved so much, I can't remember who to contact. . . .

Physicians usually have your immunizations on file if you received the vaccine there or if you provided them with that information when you started attending that practice (either through your reporting or getting the files from your previous PCP).

However, I would suspect that your undergrad might have those records.  I know when I started I had to provide the university health service with my history of vaccines.  Its worth a shot.  :D

  12. Just spoke to Jermaine. Sub-Saharan folks, you should be getting notifications this week, he is waiting for the State Department for approval. "My colleagues in DC are working very hard to get those approval done. You should be hearing by the end of this week." Ahh, can't wait. I just wanna know --whether selected or not. This 'I don't know what I'm doing with my life yet' is not fun.

ATTENTION SUB SAHARAN AFRICA RECOMMENDEES!  I just got off the phone with Jermaine Jones, the Fulbright SSA region program manager. I'm afraid it's not entirely good news, but at least it's something. He told me they are still waiting on the State Department (surprise, surprise) and they are expecting to hear back by either this coming weekend or next week sometime. He couldn't be any more specific than that. I told him I was calling on behalf of my SSA cohorts on the Grad Cafe forum and he said he was really sorry he couldn't be more specific and he thanked us all for our continued patience. He was very nice and I could tell he genuinely wished he could be more specific. He said he can't give me a date because they just don't know exactly when they'll get the go-ahead from the State Department.

So, for those of us really hoping for April 15, I'm afraid that's not going to happen. My guess is that it might be at the end of next week, i.e. around the 25th.

Sorry I couldn't pass along better news!

I just realized that these two things conflict with each other. :(

  13. Looks like they got an early start this morning.  Just heard that I was accepted as an ETA for Bulgaria!  I've seen several other Bulgaria hopefuls on here, so wanted to get the news out quickly so people knew to check.  Best of luck!

    Congratulations!!!!!!!

  14. A bit off topic, but relevent to our plans to travel abroad. I am interesting in buying a laptop because mine is crap. It's so dated that a librarian asked me if my dell vostro was a prototype for laptops! Rude! Well, I'm looking into buying a quality laptop. You know, putting a mac book pro on a credit card because I'm a poor grad student. However, I'm struggling with the decision. I'm going to research in Panama for 10 months and having such an expensive laptop could be a liability. I don't want to attract attention. What do you guys and gals think? Have you worried about your laptop abroad?

I found this great blog post about traveling with your laptop abroad.

    http://www.transitionsabroad.com/listings/travel/articles/traveling_with_your_laptop_computer_overseas.shtml

I brought my laptop with me on a number of travels overseas including West Africa for around 6 months.  Luckily *knock on wood* I have not had any problems.  I just practiced basic common sense stuff; always made sure to keep it in a locked room, keep an eye on, etc.  I didn't have any problems.

In regards to attracting attention, I only ever really used my laptop at my permanent location or at a hostel.  Usually, wherever I have used my laptop, there have been tons of others using laptops also.  However, it depends a lot more on where you will be/what is your itinerary (whether you are traveling a lot within Panama or traveling to especially remote places).

Would it be possible to keep the laptop that you have now and get a new laptop when you come back?  With that, you don't have to worry as much about someone stealing it/it getting damaged. Also, insurance for laptops can be pretty expensive. This way you wouldn't really have to worry about getting insurance for your laptop.

Also, there are tons of free programs (Prey for example) that you can use to help get back your laptop if it is stolen.  I am not sure how much it would help in rural areas.   However, it is free.  :D

  15. Hurray! Now there are four of us! I know there are more who have filled out the excel sheet, but you guys are the first ones who have posted since I've been following this topic. Meupatdoes, yes I have been to Zambia twice, for about a month each time. It is a lovely country with amazing people, especially the women. What is your proposed project in Ghana?

Mine is to write the cultural & intellectual history of the Chewa in Zambia. I'm very excited about it and really really really hope I get the FB so I can carry out my project!

jrk2115, what is your proposed project in South Africa? And Maliyazi, where do you hope to teach, and what age group?

My project is to examine at the effect of soil-transmitted helminths on the cognitive ability of school-aged children (mostly lab-based) and work with stakeholders in the community on trying to reduce the prevalence in the community.  It would hopefully also work to inform policies on nutritional aid/deworming programs.  My side project is to work with a HIV organization.

  16. Hi jrk2115 and Maliyazi! yay, now there's three of us on here. I haven't emailed anyone because traditionally, according to the excel spreadsheet, results come somewhere between April 15 and the end of April. jrk2115, you and I are both study/research grants, and Maliyazi is applying for ETA. It would be pretty cool if we could somehow meet up while we're there--maybe in Johannesburg, only about a 1 hr flight from Lusaka. At least maybe we could start a SubSaharan Africa facebook page or something. I truly wish the both of you good luck!

This is quite exciting! I am also recommended for Sub-Saharan Africa.  I applied for a Full Research Grant to Ghana!!!

There are a few more of us to SSA, I believe.  If you look at the spreadsheet, you can see everyone that is applying to countries in SSA.

Zambia looks like an amazing place.  I am doing research in Malawi for around 2 months this summer, and I was debating a short trip to Victoria Falls via Zambia.  Have you been to Zambia before?

  17. Hi everyone,

Seeing as how you all have been such a great support system throughout this process, I really need advice. I feel like my life is in shambles and moving too fast and I don't know what to do. I just got another fellowship that I applied for, but I only have until Monday to accept/reject it. I also am awaiting to get a formal full-time job offer (probably late today) that would enable me to work but then still leave for Brazil for the Fulbright if I get it. I'm really frustrated that I haven't heard about Fulbright ETA Brazil yet (as I'm sure all of you are). I need to know what to do - the other fellowship I was offered is amazing and I would definitely love to do it, but Fulbright is my very first choice. I feel like it's such a gamble and I the wait for Fulbright has been exhausting but I want the Fulbright soooo badly. I don't know if I should accept this other fellowship offer or not.

Any advice/ideas/ANYTHING would be helpful! My head is spinning.

First, congratulations on getting the other fellowship.  That is awesome!

I really sympathize with your situation.  You have to compare a sure thing (your other fellowship) and the possibility of being accepted as a Brazil ETA.   Is there any chance that you would be able to delay letting the other fellowship know?  Would any type of extension be possible? I don't know about that fellowship, yet would it hurt to ask them about it?

I started to think what I would do if I was in your situation. First, I realized that I would be soo panicked about the decision (You definitely deserve ice cream or chocolate or something to help with this...:).  I really do not know what I would do.  At first I was like, wait for Fulbright.  Take the risk, because it would be better to know that you gave it your all.

However, then I thought about it in a different way... I think that we often look at Fulbright as the goal/ the ending point.  We have this incredible, inspiring, and life-changing year, and then I think that we/I fail to look beyond it often.  Fulbright is not the ending point, it is just a step along the way to your final goals.  It is a way to help you get to where you want to go.  I know that we all wrote about this in our statements about how it would help us in our life goals, yet I think finally it is setting in.

Therefore, if I was you, I would take the other fellowship if the other fellowship would help you in your life goals.  Fulbright is not the only path or way to get where you want to go.  I would take the sure thing, be happy, and never think about it.  You can always apply again to Fulbright in the future as a scholar or research or ETA.

Good luck with your decision. I know that these decisions can be quite stressful and hard.  During the past two years especially (probably like most of the people here), I have had to make some terribly hard decisions.  I would stay up late and make pro/co lists and try to rationalize my way through everything.  But, then at the last moment, I would decide (usually the opposite to what the rational choice was...).  I have been quite happy with those choices thus far.  So, I would say, as cheezy as it sounds, go with your heart.

  18. So to take my mind off of Fulbright, I'm reading Rhodes Scholar profiles. Now, I feel like I've done nothing with my life besides eat potato chips off the couch, lol.

    1. "Interned at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade." I don't even know where Belgrade IS.

    2. "Worked with leading law enforcement authorities to use psychological research to achieve less biased trials." I did one semester of research teaching kids how to say "car" in Dutch--it's "auto," by the way.

    3. "A pianist and a freshman lightweight rower, he also trained as a competitive figure skater under the coach of the Chinese Olympic team." Well, then. Lol.

    4. "President of the Stanford Debate Society, and won 2nd place in the U.S. national debate championships." I once entered an English writing contest and got second place... out of two contestants.

    5. "Written one feature length screenplay and three for short films." I went to watch Wicked on discount tickets, once.

    6. "Tutor and lecturer in math, physics and biology in summers in Syria and Lebanon." I taught English to a group of Vietnamese nuns one semester in Taiwan.

    7. "Worked in Kenya on an irrigation project and is now developing a water project for Tanzania." I once helped my mom water her plants, and it died. :o Lol.

This is absolutely perfect!!! This literally made my day.  Too funny...

Also, I remember that someone mentioned that we should all hear by April 15th.  Who did you hear that from?  That would be perfect if it happened, yet I am trying to not get my hopes up too high to hear back by then.

Congratulations to everyone that has gotten principal!!! You will have an amazing year.  For everyone else that heard back, I have no doubt that you will go on to do amazing and incredible things.  :D

  19. It just...leaves me in a horrible situation. This was my only chance at doing what I wanted to do and to have it be over, after preparing for 4 years for this opportunity, and without an explanation...I'm sure others were more qualified, I just wish I would have at least been an alternate.

I am really sorry!!!  I would try to find other sources of funding for your UK program, if possible.  Well, obviously, it would not be ideal... most unis (at least to my knowledge) in the UK accept US Federal Loans.  They can cover both tuition and living experiences. I am currently in London doing a Masters and was able to use US Federal Loans for a large portion of the tuition.

  20. Hey everyone--

I just realized that on my application for a UK scholarship I selected the "UK Degree Partnership" award. This was completely unintentional. At the time I'm not even sure what I knew I was doing. I think I was sleep deprived. Anyways, of course I have not applied for admittance to my host university. I reread the Fulbright website and saw that the award will not be allocated unless I provide proof of admittance. Is there anything I can do at this point? I'm thinking I should probably try and contact the host university and explain the situation. It's safe to say there will be a lot of begging and maybe even a few tears shed in order to provoke some sympathy. Does anyone have any advice?

I'm really trying not to freak out and bury my feelings in a Oreo McFlurry.....

I, of course, had to be the not so bright one.

    Anyways, sorry about the rant!

I am currently in a masters program in the UK.  The dates for the programs are a lot lot later than in the US.  I submitted my application in March last year and knew in around 4 weeks.  My school will technically allow people to apply in the summer.  I think that you are still fine, however I would try to submit an app ASAP.
