  1. i apologize in advance for bumping this topic, but i thought i'd ask for some additional input.

who has employment outside of their academics and internship? i am deciding on school for the fall, and i'm worried about taking out too many loans. i'd like to work part-time to cover some costs, maybe 10-15 hours/week. is this a reasonable goal? will i burn out? should i just take the extra loans?

(anyone specifically at WashU's Brown School that can tell me about their experience there?)

I am also quite interested in this question. Have you been offered any work-study positions? Work-study is really nice, because as the name implies, if there's not a lot to do, you're allowed to do homework, read, etc. while still getting paid.

However, I might be interested in an additional part time job, so I'm wondering if work-study plus a part time job is in any way feasible with typical msw programs.

  2. For those of us who didn't get full/any funding and aren't independently wealthy, are you confident in the IBR and PSLF programs to help you pay back your debt? Are you afraid it's going to blow up in your face in a few years? Do you know anyone currently using those methods of repayment? Is it going well for them? Anyone have any good blogs/articles to read about the success and longevity of these programs?

I am confident that both the IBR and PSLF programs will help forgive the debt I accrue in grad school. If I didn't have confidence in them, I do not know how I would pay and would be quite anxious about pursuing a M.S.W..

I hope that these programs remain sustainable in the future, but we all just have to hope for the best and adapt to the changes if we need to. We'll all find a way. :)

  3. HKsai, did they e-mail you or just put it up on Albert?

and meep15, hi! has Silver acknowledged your enrollment? I enrolled like two weeks ago and still haven't gotten any kind of communication from them!

No, as a matter of fact, they re-sent me the acceptance email late Friday night. I'll be calling them on Monday to make sure things are ok.

  4. Hi Peinture! If Art Ed is in the Steinhardt school, I contacted them yesterday and said we should hear about financial aid within the week :) I'm also waiting for (hopefully good) financial news. Hope that helps!

Hopefully that'll be for the Silver School too!

  5. I'm very conflicted on which school to choose to attend.

I have applied and been accepted to NYU and Case Western for the fall. My specialization at Case would be Direct Practice with Children, Youth, and Families. My specialization at NYU would be Clinical with Children and Families.

Case Western has recently offered me more scholarship money, in addition to what they initially offered, however I am also very attracted to NYU. I have tried asking if they'd consider matching Case Western's offer, but they said no. Any thoughts on how to negotiate more with nyu?

I'm just typing out my thoughts, but opinions would be appreciated. Is it worth it to turn down such a substantial scholarship (it would cover 25% of total expenses over the two-year program) for a school that offered a lot less money in a much more expensive city, but has research opportunities and more professional opportunities overall that I'm more interested in?

  6. rshaw86 did your email have each semester listed and then an amount? Mine just listed Fall 2014 and my amount and I wondered if that meant I only got a scholarship for a semester, which I think is weird...

    Mine was the same way.

  7. hardtack&coffee: Glad to hear it! I'm very excited to meet the faculty and students and start researching. I study modern German history, but I'm kind of at a crossroads- I studied Nazi Germany as an undergrad, but I'm considering making the switch to German Cold War history, preferably from a social angle.

I was thinking Dr. Zakic or Dr. Curp might be good potential advisors. I also listed Dr. Trauschweizer as a potential advisor on my SOP because I did my undergrad thesis on Jewish-American POW's of the Third Reich. I haven't contacted any of them yet though; I should probably get on that...

Is there anyone else you can think of that might be interested in what I'm doing?

OU has great faculty for German, Russian, WWII, and Cold War history. Dr. Miner teaches and does research on the USSR.

Dr. Zakic is amazing. One of my favorite professors here.

  8. I would be coming from Texas, so it might be a big change. Athens seems like a cool town though, do you like it and the university and everything?

I love Athens. There are quite a few national/state parks within a 10 minute drive, many of the restaurants are locally-owned and even get their ingredients from a 30-mile radius, and we have a cool international film festival each spring.

I also like the university a lot. I have a history minor and even work in the history dept.. The history classes I took were focused on Nazi Germany/the Holocaust, and the USSR as a whole and during WWII specifically.

  9. I'm seriously contemplating accepting the offer but would like to learn more about the program and any additional financial aid. It'll be my project of the weekend.
