Hello Am I writting in the wrong section of the forum? Or such internships are not so common ? Please guys any one can at least give me directions to where to look??

Hello everybody I am an international student studying PhD in the US (full time). I study computer sciences. The university where I study doesn't offer summer internships. Actually I have zero experience in the procedures needed to join a summer research internship. Do I need to submit an application? Or do I need to contact faculty directly? How do I know which schools are offering such opportunities? Also, is it hard (competitive) to get into one? I know that professors prefer to work with their students. Please if anyone has any piece of information or experience regarding this, share it. It would also be really helpful to list some schools. Thank you.
