Cyhope-
Unfortunately, I think it's pretty normal in anthropology departments. The department I would most like to study in as a general rule doesn't give any fuding to first-year students- I am still hoping I can find external funding if I am admitted.
Where were you admitted? I was rejected from one school, and am waiting on 5 others.

taobenli,
I got admission in UW-Madison. This seems ideal to me because I can stay with my husband here. But the funding is not so cool...
I'm also waiting on 5 others.
good luck!

 Just want to say hello to everyone here...
I got my first admission without scholarship.
As an international student, I have to say that the financial support in this program is full of uncertainty so that I am not sure if I could afford myself studying there for, say, 3 or 5 years since the positions of TA Assistantship are limited/competative and not ensured (let alone the funding for fieldwork or fieldtrip) ...
Well,I know that searching and applying for grants and scholarship might be a good training but a challenge for a young scholar, but what about the situation that turns the program into a ph.d. in proposal writing??
is this a common situation in other dept. of anthropology?

What program?
I'm applying for ph.d. in anthropology (subfield: socio-cultural anthropology)...

Hello, I am waiting to hear from U Chicago and UC-Berkeley. Like Shellybe, I've heard that someone had got acceptance via email and I haven't...so I am really anxious.
However, since then, I think that being notified will be better than waiting, no matter whether it is good news or not. (But I am reluctant to take any action so far...)
Well, if you know the decision has been made and admissions have been sent, what will you do to get your application status? Keep waiting or contact with the Department to find out the result directly? Does anyone call to find out his/her status?
New Haven, CT

I had lived in New Haven for two years. I miss yale campus life but do think that some unpleasant neighborhoods and the rate of crime have made the city not so charming. In general, many grad students live near east rock area or some downtown apartments. In fact, it is easy for you to distinguish good and bad neighborhoods while walking in New Haven. Usually the daytime Yale transit and door to door minibus service are conveient and useful to go around the campus and the neighborhoods with grad students. But I don't think it's bike-friendly... (most Yale transit buses are just like some old school buses)
The public transportation allows you to go further to different neighborhoods (including good and bad ones). I'm not sure if CT transit (bus) is bike-friendly or not. In addition, I didn't buy a bike in new haven because it was so easy to be stolen.
