  1. Hi :)

I am applying to CSUN's online program and they just sent a survey asking detail about how you would handle the workload, etc. Do any current students have any tips or info about the program that might help me? How are tests taken, etc? It's much appreciated as this is my top school. Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

Just wondering where they sent that survey to? Was it to your personal email address or your CSUN email? Thanks and good luck!

  2. Hey everyone,

I'm applying this fall for SLP in Canada and in the USA. Since I graduated from my undergrad in 2010, I am having difficulty finding a second academic reference to fulfill the requirement. When I inquire to programs about only being able to provide one academic reference while providing GREAT clinical references (from audiologist and an SLP), all I ever get is wishy-washy answers as to if that would be frowned upon. My personal opinion thinks that recent, amazing clinical references would be great for my application, but I'm not actually sure. I could MAYBE get a generic, not-so-good academic reference from a prof years ago who would not remember me...at best. I feel at a huge disadvantage since profs that would have provided me references are on medical leave or away on sabbatical. SO, I'm wondering, have there been applicants out there who have been granted acceptance with only one academic reference?? Or, am I basically outta luck here?

    Thanks everyone!

  3. I did my undergrad at Brock as well.  I agree with you.  Brock is a major university.  People take some schools for granted.  Only if they knew how hard you have to work at Brock to earn your grades, thus i am still in this situation of trying to get accepted into a master program due to low GPA. lol

We are in the same boat! What year did you graduate? Lol. I went to Brock specifically for it's program & how it prepped its undergrad students for SLP/Audi in masters hehe.

  4. It's interesting we're all going to have our GRE's. The biggest challenge is juggling personal statement revisions, keeping up grades and budgeting. Add the fees to get transcripts assessed by WES. It's going to put a dent in my wallet.

I finished mine in 2011 before they switched to the new test and it's good for another 2 years. Looking back, I think it was one of the most stressful test I have taken in my entire life after my driving test  :)

Sadly, my grades aren't that high for Ontario schools and Dal and I won't be able to finish the neuroscience prerequisite in time for UofA.

Van Tech, where did you apply in New York?

The College of Saint Rose, Albany New York

  5. Yes! It'll be third time applying for me (applied first time after undergrad, was accepted to one school in New York but did not attend, gained work experience, applied last year with zero acceptances) so I am getting old and would love to accomplish this already! I'm taking my GRE at the end of September so I can apply to more programs....eeek!

  6. Thought I would chime in on this topic:

I work as an "SLPA" in Canada - but we have programs here (in Ontario), and we are called Communicative Disorders Assistants (CDA's). However, this program is not fully acknowledged across the country, it is way more recognized out east (Ontario area) most likely because of the programs that offer these job positions.   I did some work as a CDA in Ontario before I moved to Vancouver, where there are a lot more opportunites (maybe because there are less qualified people in the province due to lack of the program here). Here, I work as a SLPA and as a "technician" -- as a tech, I am assisting audiologists in a hearing clinic. I really love the hands-on experience I have gained here & as a result have made some great connections within the field and LORs. Just thought I would pass on some Canadian info - feel free to PM me if you have any questions :)

  7. UBC was my top choice. After being rejected for the second time this year, I again inquired with admissions on how I could improve my application for next year. I was told that I met all requirements, etc. etc. etc., and there was a large applicant pool, but that there are no further recommendations! So, I am kind of at a loss. I would have liked to hear *something* - i.e. gain this or that, applicants accepted had a more competitive GPA...something! Any tips for those of you who have been accepted to UBC would be greatly appreciated, so I can kind of compare and see where I stand, as I try and figure this out for next year. Thank you!!!! :)

  8.  Hey VanTech,

I have been e-mailing Sue for the past few weeks and she said that "no final decisions have been made. It will be a couple of more weeks." But this morning, seeing that I did not get into Toronto and Western, I decided to e-mail her one last time. I asked her if applicants who haven't heard from her means that they were rejected, and she replied and said yes and that letter mails have been sent out. Is this your second time applying to UBC? Whats your plan b?

Hi, oh, that is sad. :(!! Rough day for sure. I am not sure of my Plan B, I am on a rollercoaster ride that's for sure. I've been working towards this for YEARS and I'm getting old and I'm not sure what to do next. You?!

  9. Hi everyone,

This is my second time applying at UBC and first time at applying at Toronto and Western. Unfortunately, I got rejected from all schools  :( . I honestly thought I could at least be waitlisted at UBC since it was my second time applying (I did my undergrad there as well) and my references were even UBC graduate professors of the masters program. I don't know what else I could have done since I thought my SOI was well written and had 400+ hours volunteering with children AND adults in both clinical and school settings. I also have a sGPA of 3.9. Any advice? Today has not been going so well  :(

Sorry to hear, you and I are in the same boat! How did you hear from UBC? I have yet to have an answer, but have basically realized that it's probably a rejection as well.

  10. Hey, just wanting to send you some encouraging remarks.

I applied to McGill, U of T, and Western also this year and have been rejected from them all. (haven't actually heard from U of T, but I emailed Mabel and got no response so I'm doubting I got wait listed). I feel the same way, and have been crying all morning. I have really great grades, keeping my marks above 90 since I realized this is what I want to do. However, when I started University I wasn't as motivated and those marks are showing through.

All I know is that I will try again, and I'm sure you will too. I emailed the speech pathologist I volunteer for this morning and told her the news (that I would be volunteering still this next year). She was so kind and told me that I must keep trying and that not getting in will make me appreciate it so much more when I do. She also did not get in her first time applying.

So for all of us who are not screaming in joy, and weighing our options, chin up! I believe in hard work, dedication, and you all.

Thanks Kats,  as I am in the same boat (applied to McGill, Western & UBC...have not heard from UBC but I'm guessing since I haven't heard from now and others have been accepted/waitlisted, I'm just waiting for the rejection letter in the mail). It's a difficult process and this was my 2nd round of applying, and I haven't even gotten on a waitlist. It's gut wrenching, really.  If anyone can share their stats/what the did/etc that would be so appreciative, as I'm not sure which way to go now. I have direct work experience, great LOR, upgraded my GPA this past year through Athabasca, and still nothing. All morning I have been googling Plan B ideas but nothing is half as appealing, but I'm not sure if I can go through this process again!
