I'm also moving from the across the country, but i was lucky enough to be able to visit Tallahassee to apartment hunt and sign a lease. If you're looking for somewhere within walking distance, i would recommend Phoenix South Management. They own several apartment buildings within 3-5 minutes of the Diffenbough building. They offer several different floor plans, though they're a bit small. They're also still fairly affordable (considering proximity to campus) and I know of two grad students in my department who have lived there for years and really like it. I myself just signed a lease there last week. You can apply/sign your lease online ahead of time which might save you the worry/headache of waiting until last minute. Many places I saw were filling up quickly even this early in the summer. Hope this helps!

Hi! I'll be starting at LSU this fall as well -- French department.
I second the request for information if anyone can help out -- I'm moving to Tallahassee from MI and have never even visited the city, so any info/recommendations are appreciated.

Hey, just accepted an offer for the French Lit program at FSU, and looking to find an apartment. I'm hoping to find somewhere close to campus (I'll have a car, but hope not to have to commute with it daily), that is relatively quiet, and is also pet friendly (for a cat). (Safety and affordability are also obviously important.) Can anyone give me any recommendations as to apartment complexes or neighborhoods to look in?
Also, how is the public transport? I know there's a campus bus system; is there a city bus system as well? Does it run generally on-time? I was reading about some bad traffic in certain areas of town -- how does this affect the bus schedule?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not entirely sure about the noise level, but the two girls I know who live there said that they never had any problem with noise in the area. I know there are some sororities and fraternities in the area, so maybe it depends on the exact building, but I think Jefferson Towers and College Plaza are pretty quiet at least.
