Would I be better off studying specific words and how to use them in context (kaplan's essential gre words) or greek and latin root words?

How should I study for words that have very similar meanings. should I try to memorize what every word means (which I've been trying to do but is hard) or just memorize the word themselves even if I have no idea what some of them might mean? thanks
