  1. Thanks for replying!

I have done my undergrad in Engineering and have 2.5 years of work experience in non-profit sector. Would this put me up in the list?

Also, what kind of specializations do we need to have in Public Policy to get into Consulting jobs?

    Quite competitive.

Successful international students tend to have strong quant backgrounds and previous work experience. If your undergrad was in something like Finance, Accounting, Computer Science, etc you'll have a better time than if your undergrad was in a liberal arts field. Ditto if you've developed a high-demand skill set (statistical analysis, programming, etc).

  2. Hi! I'm an international student too, and I'm about to start my graduate study this fall. Here's a little something about myself. I hope it can help you gain some confidence when you apply. I'm straight out of undergrad and my only work experience was a one month full-time internship in a local government's foreign affairs office. I had some international volunteer experience, but none of them was longer than a month. (VISA restriction sucks) Well as you can see, you definitely have a stronger background in working than I do. Since I managed to get in some schools that I really like, I believe you will too in the near future.

I think when applying, the most important thing is to show the ad comm how you fit their program. Sure work experience in related field is of great significance, but you can still show that you're a good fit by emphasizing your other strengths, your unique experience and your motivation in your personal statement.

    I hope this will help.

    Hey!

I am also planning to apply for the Masters in Public Policy program and I am an International student. Can you please tell me what are the job prospects like in the Private sector for International students? Since we don't have a chance in the Public and Government sector! I would also like to work in the for-profit sector after Graduation...

  3. Hey, I am planning to apply to the Masters in Public Policy program. Since I am an International student I am apprehensive about the job opportunities. The Public and Government sector hire students with US citizenship only. So, that leaves International students aiming for Private sector jobs. I would like to know how are the job prospects like in the private sector like to get into Consulting jobs, Banks, Financial firms etc. Also how competitive are they? Please help!!!

    Thanks :)

  4. Hi everyone,

Can you please evaluate my profile?

I want to apply to MPP program in the top schools and HKS is a dream. Please evaluate my profile and give a realistic idea of the chances I may have of getting selected for Spring 2014:

Done Bachelors in Engineering for four years and have a GPA of 3.0

    Organised Non-Profit clubs in college.
Worked in an IT company but decided to follow my passion and work in the non-profit sector.

Worked in an NGO for 2 years (this Nov will be completing two years) that aims for grassroots Leadership. Organised and facilitated a number of projects under the Community leadership domain.

Been a blue cross volunteer and also facilitated Youth Empowerment Seminars in my city for three years.

Extra curricular activities- Travelled quite a bit, have been a dancer since 5 years.

I got good scores in GRE and TOEFL. What are my chances with a strong SOP to get into HKS, University of Chicago, Berkeley?

    Thank you  :)
