  1. Rejection - Low Priority. For the lamest reasons possible that i have ever seen. And I've written A LOT of proposals. Good luck to everyone that is left!!!!

Haha I feel ya. Although I got Medium Priority the experimental design "concerns" were ridiculous and nearly impossible for me to satisfy.

  2. I heard last winter that the director wanted to increase the number of fellowships, so my guess is that they're looking for funding for additional grants.

I wish they would be more open about this delay in decision - for whatever the reason is.

  3. Well there isn't an abstract for the grad student winner from the link above (Washington University in St. Louis), so who knows how many winners there have been so far.

I got an email from Dr. Ali and his response "Announcements are anticipated within the next two weeks." Here is to hoping it doesn't get pushed back again!

Edit: another postdoc recipient was added to CRIS. I doubt this is fully up to date

  4. Just took a look at CRIS (the abstracts of funded projects) for the fellowship.  It was at 214 records since February, now it is at 217.

Good call. It appears that it's 1 postdoc fellowship, 1 grad fellowship, and an unrelated grant. I wonder if we won't hear the final announcement until Fiscal Year 2015 - October 1st.

  5. Must be. I can't imagine anyother reseason. What I don't see a reason for is keeping us in the dark about what is going on. These proposals are a lot of work to put together, I think we deserve a little bit more than this.

    Agreed!

  6. My gameplan is that tomorrow, I'm going to sit down with him and tell him that I'm going through a really rough patch, and that I really need to spend some time away from here because being here is contributing to that rough patch, which is causing my aversion/apathy towards my thesis and the degree. I'll explain that a lot has happened in my personal life, and that I really need to get away for a while and would like a way to work things out so I can go away for a while. If he can't agree to a compromise on that, I'll just walk, and I'll have no problem doing so.

I think I might regret not getting the Master's, but I absolutely hate doing labwork, and I don't really like writing the thesis. I'm wondering if I can even put in 100% effort anymore, because the last year or so has really destroyed my confidence and drive here. It's just something I don't really want anymore, and something I don't necessarily believe is worth all the crap I've been put through for it, but I can't help feeling like it's something I should have. At the same time, I'm so miserable and lonely here, and I really just want to move on with my life, and staying here just makes me feel like I'm putting everything on hold.

I don't really feel good about leaving, because I worry about possibly regretting it; but I also don't feel good about staying because I know how much I dislike the labwork, thesis, and the town, and the loneliness and wonder if I can really handle another 6 months of it. I feel like there's no winning in this situation.

Pullman can be a very lonely town for grad students. If you want to grab a cup of coffee let me know - Cafe Moro is a great place to unwind and there are many fellow grad students that spend many hours there.

  7. I am about to go crazy!!! Both times I contacted him; he replied. Last time he said winners will be annonced later August. I heard from someone else that the we won't hear anything until early October :(

    This is ridiculous wait time.

  8. Anyone hear anything? I've tried to email Dr. Ali and once again he has not replied. I think I've emailed and called him 3 times over the last several months and I never get a response back.

  9. Interesting.  So I went on grants.gov, which I've done repeatedly before even though it's really no help in tracking progress on grant applications because it appears they don't update it until a decision has been made, and I'm now getting an error message telling me the tracking number is not valid.  ???

    Same here

  10. I've lost all hope. I feel pretty strongly that all the awards have been awarded and we are just waiting for them to finalize everything before they tell us we lost. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not sure what else to think at this point.

I agree that at this point it's not good. I think the best situation would be to get reviews back saying to resubmit next year.

Has anyone thought of other fellowships to apply to? I would really like to be done in 1.5 - 2 years, so applying to NIFA for 2015 would be out of my scope - at least for predoctoral.

  11. My online snooping indicates that at least some predoc and postdoc awards have been made. See this webpage, for example, congratulating a grad student on receiving a predoc fellowship grant on July 18.

I fear that at this point we may just be waiting to receive the review package and a thanks for applying message in late August.

Super bummed. I find it strange that all the grad students that are active on this forum were unlucky.

  12. I would think you would only take vet med jobs after that program. However, if you want to study parasite genetics, isn't that where you were planning to be? The only way I could see it being viewed more broadly is if you focused on zoonotic parasites and tried to expand into human public health.

(I studied vet med before I turned to public policy, so I knew the grad students in the vet school. They were all planning to continue with veterinary science in some way.)

This isn't always true. We have many researchers that study animal pathogens that are similar to human pathogens (bovine babesiosis and malaria) because it allows them to work in host and do experiments that wouldn't be possible on humans. In fact there are several PIs that are human disease trained scientists that use animal pathogens as models because of this.

  13. I'm in a veterinary science program but it's really an umbrella program to microbiology, genetics, veterinary entomology, parasitology, etc etc research. I have haven't encountered anyone having problems with postdocs or other postdoctoral paths because it's called "veterinary". Your research, PI connections, and where you publish/present is what is important (and maybe the classes you take). I think the name of your degree doesn't mean a lot, but more of your experiences and expertise. The positive thing about being connected to a vet school is generally there is a lot of money to go around - I've never had to worry about research funds or lack of equipment.

  14. I have been reading all your posts every day for the past months. I sent a message to Dr. Ali (the guy in charge of the pre-doc applications) and he said results will be announced later August :(

Ugh how convenient. Thanks for letting us know!

  15. To be probably too honest, I check this thread multiple times a day, lol. So don't worry, as soon as I hear something you people will know! :P

I'm right there with ya. haha

  16. Yeah I haven't heard anything either. That sounds like a good question for your Grad Secratary. I'm pretty sure you can't do that here at Pitt. Maybe you can defer it until spring if you are awarded one? Does anyone know for sure that they haven't announced the Graduate Fellowships yet? Maybe they did and we didn't get one, LOL.

I haven't heard anything either. This forum is the only source of announcement that I know of. I was also wondering maybe they've announced it but we are the unlucky ones, but hopefully not!! If either of you hear anything please post - I need to know (good or bad) to calm my nerves.

Nothing yet for pre-doct? I hate this waiting deal. Do you guys know if I can still be a TA and have the NIFA fellowship/

You wouldn't be able to TA and have the fellowship. The directions were very specific about that. You should be able to change the start date of the fellowship with your Grants and Research office, however I do not know if USDA allows postponing the start date. I'm in the same boat as you - I have a TA position and if USDA hurries and announces the results I can back out for maybe 10 more days but soon I'll have to seriously commit for the semester.

  17. Ticks_and_stuff, are you waiting to hear about a post doc award or grad?

Graduate. I hope only Postdoc awards were announced today and after they figure out how many turn down the award Monday then they will announce graduate.

  18. Congratulations! :) Hopefully the rest of us hear something soon.

Now I'm checking my email every minute haha Waiting is the worst
