I heard last winter that the director wanted to increase the number of fellowships, so my guess is that they're looking for funding for additional grants.
Interesting. So I went on grants.gov, which I've done repeatedly before even though it's really no help in tracking progress on grant applications because it appears they don't update it until a decision has been made, and I'm now getting an error message telling me the tracking number is not valid. ???
My online snooping indicates that at least some predoc and postdoc awards have been made. See this webpage, for example, congratulating a grad student on receiving a predoc fellowship grant on July 18.
