  1. Guys! I am soon confused right now. I got the financial package from Columbia and in the end, it is very comparable to NYU.  I would of course owe more in loans if I go to Columbia and have less money for living expenses, but in the end, they are pretty comparable, which I was not expecting.

The course curriculum seems very similar too.

Argh! Now I'm not sure anymore.

  2. chilly,

Thanks for the details! Wow, I can't believe they said that. I did part of my undergrad at Columbia and they were actually great so I was surprised to see how different CSSW was, especially since we are talking about social work and there's some expectation for some humility and self-awareness. BTW, I do not want to disparage anyone who is going to Columbia because obviously they are a good school - just not a cultural fit for me.

Hope you get into Hunter! Best of luck! I've heard only great things about Hunter.

Riemann, I am so glad you felt the same way. I thought I was the only one who was annoyed by their viewpoint. I am graduating from a state school where people are much more down to earth and I honestly am praying I get into Hunter because the people are much more realistic than the ivy league. It is a huge switch from public to ivy league. There were faculty members there who did a panel, there were four who ran each "concentration". When one was asked a question she replied "you don't have to worry about anything you have Columbia on your resume". I really didn't like the feel at all and couldn't justify taking out 90k in loans for the school that I already didn't like. I like NYU much much better, the students are much nicer, Greenwich village is an amazing location and it's a clinical only program. Def will be declining Columbia based on the vibe I got today.

  3. chilly, I didn't go today but watched the live stream. I had the same feeling as you when I went there a few months ago for an information session: great on paper but kind of obnoxious in person.

I'm curious (since the livestream did not work until 3pm): were there any faculty members running or answering questions during the morning sessions or was it all administrative staff?

  4. jharper, not sure what you mean by "alllllllll the way" :).  I logged in and it says "submitted". I do not see any decision letters but how weird that they updated you so long ago without sending an email.

I wonder what percentage of people who end up attending Columbia lose deposit money because they had to accept other offers.

  5. The admissions office told me I would know the answer by the end of this week. Guess what? No answer still. So frustrated with them. I got a generic email a couple of weeks ago and on the bottom it said, "Again, congratulations! Join our admitted students Facebook group here." But no actual offer. Ugh. I am mostly just frustrated with the long wait (4 months) when they said 4 weeks and that they keep saying that we would know "this week".

  6. I applied to NYU, which is my first choice because I want to do clinical practice, and to Columbia's online program.

I like NYU's program itself, the curriculum and their reputation for being an excellent psychodynamic/biopsychosocial program. But they have also been really, really nice, available, they email back, they have answered numerous questions for me, I got an appt with a faculty member who spent considerable time with me and seemed to love the school and made me feel like they wanted me there and were interested in my goals, etc. It is also $20,000 cheaper and they offered a great scholarship.

Columbia is attractive to me because of the online option and the name. I love taking classes online. I am sure that the program is very good, though maybe their reputation is better in policy than in clinical practice. However, they have been SO unresponsive in my experience, v aloof, not answering emails, not really willing to talk abt the program; the staff I met with or talked to have all been kind of blase. I feel like they are counting on their Ivy league laurels a little bit. I am also disappointed that it is taking them months to send out decisions when we were supposed to receive them within weeks.

I gave NYU my deposit months ago. I am still waiting to see what Columbia offers (if anything!) but even though they started as the frontrunner for me, they fell waaaaay behind NYU.

    What are your thoughts?

  7. MSHopefulCT,

I wonder if that's the group I was trying to join :(  We can start a new group!

There's a group called NYU Silver School of Social Work - New MSW Students that is up and active. I just asked there about the 2017 group and if you join, you

can see me there and we can be friends! :) I only use FB for NYU and would love to meet people from my cohort! Will you be going to NYU or

are you waiting for CSULB? And do you live in CT? I live in CT.

  8. riyadiya,

there's a Facebook group but the admins are not approving new members, i think? my request has been pending for months :(

    Hi all,

I don't know if this has been said before, but is there a facebook page for the NYU MSW class of 2017 page? Not sure if I'm going there yet, but it would be cool to join a facebook group.

  9. bella, congratulations!! I don't know how I will pay yet. They offered a scholarship for almost half of the cost and I am hoping that FAFSA will cover the rest?... If not, loans, loans, loans :(

    Hi All,

I was accepted to NYU as well and I'm strongly considering it, but the financial aspect is what is holding me back. Those of you that have decided to attend NYU, how will you be paying for it? I know living expenses in NY are crazy expensive as well! I appreciate any input in advance!

  10. hiclub,

It's relatively close too 116th (I think it's at 122nd, so 5-6 long blocks) but it's in an area that feels v different: it's all store after store, some abandoned buildings, etc. I lived in the city for many years and I wouldn't go back for that experience; it felt isolated from any "school vibe" that I would like. BUT that's just me and I really mean that sincerely. I've been out of school for a few years and I want to feel like I'm connected to the community a bit more and I didn't feel that at CSSW. If I was younger I probably wouldn't care at all.

Check out the street view on google to get an idea of what it looks like.

  11. I applied to the online program in November, had the interview in December, and they told me they would let people know in March. I already accepted NYU because it was my first choice and I only had 4 weeks to accept but I would still like to see if I can get into Columbia and it's the only other school I applied to.

Just to add a little totally personal perspective for those who have not visited Columbia yet, I had high expectations of the school but in person I was really disappointed. The school is off from the main campus and the admissions people and one faculty we met with seemed really cold and unhappy to be dealing with candidates. I get that it's a big name school and we want them more than they want us, but I for one felt very faceless there.

  12. Right above! Under Application Status: The Silver School of Social Work is processing your application. Below you will see the credentials we expect to process for your application and the processing status of each item. Be aware that while items may be in our office, it may take several weeks before credentials are actually processed and reflected on the checklist."

    You're welcome, Mingus1.

hiclub2 - Thank you! That was helpful.

RiemannForBeginners - Where does yours say it's processing? Mine says Regular Decision under Notification Plan, but I don't see processing anywhere.

  13. I got that and I think two other e-mails before my acceptance e-mail.

    Hey monochrome,

Does your Albert still say "Regular Decision" and that they are processing the application? Mine still does but I paid my deposit months ago at this point (on time). No big deal, just wish it would update so I can feel like I'm a student!

  14. I am currently working as a case management agency and working with clients who have mental health issues. (some health issues) It depends on your field and I get individual session once per week and I usually do non-therapy work. classes are roughly 20 students and usually in a small class. I've learned a lot of information in one semester but I just don't like how NYU doesn't have a campus.

    Thank you very much!
