  1. I know The Bank section of this forum is dedicated to financial discussions but I wanted input from current or rising biomedical/biological science grad students.

I've searched for scholarships and fellowships available to doctoral students in the biosciences and most of them were from NIH, CDC, HHMI as expected.

I've also  found awards available from these entities so far:

    1. AAAS

    2. NSF

    3. Hertz Foundation (more for physical sciences)

    4. American Heart Association

    5. SMART scholarship

    6. other fellowships from DOE, DOD

Can anyone suggest other foundations/institutions/organizations that offer pre-doctoral funding (preferably for bioscience students)?

  2. I'll be accepting my fellowship offer at USC sometime this month. Most people on this thread seem to be looking to live near main campus but if anyone else is looking for apartments near Keck SOM plus a female roommate, PM me!

  3. What are some common interview questions which are asked during grad school interviews?

Also, I've heard that applicants may be asked what other schools they've applied to; does anyone have advice on the best way to address this kind of question?

  4. I have 2 questions regarding CV/Resume submissions for grad school

    1.       It’s my understanding that a CV “is a fairly detailed overview of your life’s accomplishments, especially those most relevant to the realm of academia” – I can see how someone who has a master’s could have a CV, but are undergrads expected to be able to create one also?

    2.       If a resume would be more appropriate, then should the content of the resume I submit to grad schools be different from the one I typically submit to employers? The resume I submit to employers only lists the tasks I performed in the labs I’ve worked in but does not highlight the fact that I had independent projects..

  5. Hi all, I wanted all of your input on something that has been on my mind lately. One of my letter of rec writers is my undergrad research mentor of 3 years, who just started at a different institution this fall and is an assistant professor there. She was a postdoc when she trained me but since she has professorship now I thought it would be acceptable to ask her for a letter instead of the PI, who did know me but I didn't directly work with him. Is it ok that I asked a just-promoted assistant professor instead of an tenured professor?

From what I'm reading here, it's not uncommon for new faculty to write letters for grad school bound undergrads..

My other to letters will be from my academic advisor and an associate professor whose lab I worked in during a summer internship.
