Hi everybody, Who`s in for Hispanic Linguistics applications this year? I have an interest in working with languages in contact, specially Spanish & Portuguese and also language pedagogy (Portuguese as a foreign/second language. I would like to know about other programs in Hispanic/Spanish linguistics which works with Portuguese as well. I`ve found that it isn`t so easy to find lots of programs actually working with Portuguese. So far, my list is: Berkeley, UMass - Amherst, UTexas at Austin, UGA, Illinois - Urbana Champaign, Ohio State, U of Michigan, U of Arizona and Indiana University. Let the application season begin!

hahahaha true: it is hot like hell in Brazil, so not going suit shopping is my silver linings too! I am still waiting for two other decisions though... And for HigherEdLife: agreed... I think you guys will have to wait a little more. So hang in there! Hopefully, you`ll get very good news from West Philadelphia!
-
As far as I know, only PhD!!! Hold on a little more there, tchrsquirrel!!!! Hopefully, you will be getting good news very soon. Fingers crossed!
-
I think they are just busy processing the doctoral programs right now, travelgirl! =( Hopefully, very soon you will get your very good news from Penn!!!!!!! Whooohey!
-
Hummm... I think it is only for PhD candidates. Also, this is the email I received. There is always hope!
-
From what I understood, the most promising applicants are contacted to be part of the PhD weekend in February regardless the specialization. But I cannot tell you if this works for ALL of the PhD programs!

Hi guys: I`ve got news! I wrote an email to Penn GSE and got this a minute ago: "At this time, all invitations have been extended to students selected for the first round of interviews in February. If you were not contacted for an interview, this is not necessarily the end of the road. Occasionally the faculty will return to the pool of applicants and select more students for interviews after the initial group. It is not common, but it does happen every once in a while. For this reason, we do not issue any official decision letters until mid-March." I did not get one! Anyways, I wish you guys a great journey ahead and that you can succeed in whatever you do!

Blahhh.. Same here. I just want whatever result now heheh...
-
Guys... Any news at your end??
-
Ahhh! Happy for your friend and sad because I'm also ed. Linguistics and did not receive anything!
-
Intercultural communication is within the Ed Lx division, so hou are fine!!!
-
Your stats sound very good! Dont worry too much. When does masters results start coming out??
-
I think we are all in the same boat.. I had a great experience there, that is very true, but at the same time I dont have a good GRE number ... Plus, my undergraduate studies are from a unknown school in the US. So I also think my chances are slim... In any case, applying is the smartest thing we've done if we want to make it to Penn!
-
Yeah, Penn and Philadelphia are VERY nice places!! Hopefully, we will start having some news this week... Ah!! I studied Educational Linguistics, Teaching Methodology and taught my native language for freshman students. It was a great experience and I had the chance to get to know GSE!
-
Not yet either. My app status is still "ready for review". Hummm... I'd say we'll start having some news by next week? Are you guys currently studying st Penn? I was a Fulbright scholar there last year willing to come back!
-
Kyreina-Musuma: Thank you so much for your comment! Im glad you had the chance to complete your application!
-
I've just seen it too and was wondering exactly the same thing... You guys know if extensions are common?
-
What division are you applying to? Yeah... Do not feel discouraged! Try to enjoy the holidays and January is coming soon!!!
-
I think it is still a little early to hear from them... Mid to late January and we'll have some directions, I guess!
-
Yep! I have a masters in Linguistics and now applying for PhD. Also applying to Stanford, Georgetown, Urbana-Champaign and Columbia!

Do I still have a shot with these horrendous GRE scores?
cami15 replied to boomerang's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Hey, guys! Same situation here. I wrote the GRE twice and got the same scores (150V; 140Q; 3AWA). I'm an international student applying for phds in education and despite my scores, I'm still applying to top programs. I was a Fulbright scholar at UPenn for one year, taught Portuguese and attended 3 graduate courses (gpa:3,85). I hold a master in language studies, have a publication and 5 years of experience in research. Apart from that, I also have lots of experience with teaching Portuguese and English. So I decided I deserved a shot. I have LoR from my home country master's advisor and from Upenn. Anybody else applying for education programs? -
Hey guys! When do you think PhD applicants get a notification about the PhD weekend thing that generally take place on February? And does anybody know what is this weekend about? Interviews? Just throwing some topic here so we can interact more!
