I am waiting on one last EAS(-tangential) department, which is at Minnesota. After that decision comes, containing the somber platitude I know it will, I shall show myself out, and bid you all a fulfilling and joyous end to the cycle, imparting as I depart some lines of prose! Until then, I remain, weathered and disgruntled but glad nonetheless to have had all of your company throughout these agonizing and exciting months.
I am still waiting on UT-Austin and UC Irvine. I contacted their respective East Asian Studies departments to inquire about my application but they never responded...

Got rejection from NYU yesterday. I'm now just waiting on Upitt and UMass Amherst, and technically Northeastern (I know acceptances have already gone out, so I'm pretty sure I didn't get a spot, I was on the shortlist so I think they might be waiting to see if someone doesn't accept offer - but their funding package is insanely good (40K) so I don't expect that). At this point, it's not looking like I'm going to get in this round, my plan is to find some sort of museum/public history job for a year and reapply next cycle.
i am still waiting on Pitt too. I contacted the graduate director and he told me that they did not start reviewing applications until January 15th and that they "had an unusually large pool of strong applications this year." He also said that I should "soon hear from us."

Hi! I got rejected by UT Austin Asian Studies MA last Wednesday. They didn't really send out any notifying email (same thing with Yale EAS), I just happened to check the portal and saw the rejection. Best of luck!
I applied to the PhD program and my portal still states that the "file is under review"

Has anyone heard anything from UT Austin or UC Irvine? They are my last two hopes...

I'm a new grad student majoring in history at SDSU. Where's a good place to stay in the area? I'm originally from Sacramento (which makes it even harder to find something because I'm not local) and am looking for a studio or 1-bedroom apartment in a decent area, and within my budget (approx. $700-950/ mo). anyone have any ideas? I would like to stay within 5-15 miles of campus;I am not too keen on living too far away from campus (over 15 miles) unless the apartment is near the trolley line. People say that I've waited too long to find anything (late July), but classes do not begin until late August, so I think that there should be something available--Would El Cajon or Clairemont work?

The graduate coordinator at San Diego State contacted me a couple of days ago to say that the department committee would meet Friday (today) to discuss my application. Today she sent me an email saying that due to "unforeseen circumstances" the committee could not meet, but that she would have a decision before April 15. I'm starting to think that I have been rejected...

I applied to the Asian studies masters program at CSU Long Beach and History MA program San Diego State in February. My file was complete (meaning all of my supplementary materials were received) two weeks ago.Since it is nearly April 15th, i need to a decision so I can let the schools i have been admitted to know if I am going to accept their offers. How long should I wait before contacting the History department?

I haven't heard anything - but as brl said - I saw some posts on the results page making me loose hope as I thought oregon was a good fit for me - fingers crossed all acceptances didn't go out yesterday! good luck to you
And congrats brl254
Is the status of your application still "pending?"

Has anyone heard from the University of Oregon?

Just got my GRE scores: 155 verbal, 150 quantitative, and only a 4.0 analytical writing. Does this end my chances of getting into a top program for history or East Asian Studies?

Are you interested in Premodern or Modern Japanese history? I can recommend a few on the Premodern side. That said, I would recommend looking at East Asian Studies Masters programs as well; you may have high Japanese reading schools, but those programs may help you work on your speaking skills. (As well as Classical and/or Kambun if you're doing Premodern, or beginning Chinese or Korean if you're doing modern.) You also may want to take a look at IUC (the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies) as an alternative if you don't get into a grad program next year.
I'm sorry, I should have stated my interests.
My true passion is the role the Japanese economic bubble played and continues to play in the Japan of today, on which I feel that there is a lack of scholarship. Beyond that, I am interested in my ability to participate in researching the modern and contemporary history of Japan, especially during the bubble period and the subsequent "lost decade" of the nineties.

I am a senior history major at Northern Arizona University who is graduating in December, currently applying to various Japanese history masters and doctoral programs on the west coast. My GPA is 3.62; I am taking the GRE on the 18th. My letters of recommendation from two of my history professors should be solid, although I am worried about the other one which is being written by a philosophy adjunct.
Anyway, the schools I am applying to are:
University of Washington, the UC campuses in Irvine, San Diego, Davis, and Santa Barbara, Cal States San Diego, San Francisco, Fullerton, and possibly Fresno. I am also considering the University of Wisconsin in Madison and Florida State.
I claim a very high level of Japanese reading and writing (I can read newspapers, popular fiction, and pre-war materials without needing a dictionary), although my speaking needs work.

I am a senior history major who is graduating in December and I am just now looking at master's programs. I want to pursue an MA in East Asian Studies or history (I want to focus on post-war Japan with emphasis on the bubble period) and I was looking at Cal State schools. My professor recommended Long Beach State, San Jose State, and Sacramento State along with UC Riverside and UC Irvine, but I noticed that the Cal States do not require GRE scores. Does that mean that they aren't quality programs? I'm leaning towards CSUs because I am looking to save money and I have read that funding is hard to come by for master's students as opposed to doctoral students.
