  1. Has anyone heard from UBC? I saw an acceptance posted a while ago, but am not sure if all of them have gone out yet.

I was told by the graduate secretary that they will try to finalize the decisions in the coming week or so.

  2. I was told by people, including professors and students from last year.

The invites are sent out by POIs, and once you're asked to go to the recruitment event, you have a pretty good chance of getting accepted. There isn't a formal interview, though I expect that you'd be able to meet with professors during the recruitment event.

  3. Haidt isn't taking students.

I know, he told me when I emailed him. But he also said to apply anyway, just in case our interests match a lot, and especially if I was also interested in other professors there.
  4. Thus far I've dropped at least $300 for 3 schools that took my app fee and my GRE report without even looking at my app. What sort of economic transaction is this? If somebody, anybody at all, spent an hour reviewing my app and then threw it in the trash, they would at least have rendered me an intellectual service that justifies the money I gave them. Here they just take the money and trash my app.

This is only one of many things that don't make any sense to me about the workings of academia. It's like you have to sign an implicit agreement to forgo your entitlement to common-sense fairness when you volunteer to join academe, in exchange for the slim chance of one day being on the benefiting side of said lack of fairness.

How do you find out that they haven't looked at your applications?
  5. You can try to give them a call and see what's up.

My Virginia application still says they have not received my GRE scores, even though I sent those in October. I even called them to make sure they got it, and they said they'd update my file. They didn't. I'll wait a couple of days and call back.

  6. Nope, nothing from UBC. Having a Jan. 15th deadline and an internationally known program, I bet they still have a lot of applications to go through before we hear any news.

Yah. I submitted my application pretty early though, so I thought maybe they'd start looking early or something :P.

Who are your POIs there, if you don't mind me asking?

  7. On the Cornell website, it did say that people would typically be notified by the end of January regarding the recruitment weekend. But I don't think I've seen any social people getting anything yet. So fingers crossed for everyone.

JSocial86 - by the way, have you heard anything from UBC yet?

  8. U Toronto doesn't do formal interviews, I don't think.

Did you apply to/contact specific POIs there? If you did, you may receive an informal interview with your POI(s). Then you just have to wait for them to invite you to the visiting weekend sometime in late February/early March. If you get an invite to this weekend, you're pretty much accepted into the program.
