I'm gonna stop you on your third to last sentence because schools definitely do not weigh that as much against people as you're making it out to be. Harvard, especially, has the money to fly people out and cares about quality for their incoming class - not where else you're applying to. Also, the cost to fly to Boston from California can literally be cheaper than flying someone from NYC to Boston. But, yes, I also haven't gotten an interview from Harvard BBS, but I'm quite content with the other 8 that I have thus far. @cliu while you can hold out for that Harvard one, just concentrate on your actual interview invites as well, if not more.

It's not inappropriate. It's very common and they understand (for both, but especially the interviews).
-
Oh, good to know! @AgingBio123 Note that the Yale BBS registrar is now on vacation until Jan 4th so you won't hear anything back. And I'm here worrying that they won't accomodate my interview switch from Feb 4th to Feb 18th. #strugglebus
-
Congrats. Me three. Except all three weekends are already booked for me so :/
-
Well that's great because now all my February is booked up and I thought Rockefeller would be first week of March. So whether I get the interview now or not is a meh. Feel free to ask for Skype interviews. I've had plenty that allowed that. Only a few schools said they only do interviews during the days they said they do. And ain't nobody got time for that. Programs thinking they're so special that they can't go out of their way for potential grad students. You can only imagine how far out of the way they'll go for you while you are in the program.
-
True story. But I'm actually in a pickle. When they called, it was really early and it was a whirlwind of info. I think I accepted without realizing I already had the Feb date confirmed elsewhere. However, I checked the BBS website and it said the following interview dates existed. February 5th & 6th: MCGD and CBB Tracks February 19th & 20th: MCGD, MMPP, and Immunology Tracks However, the letter doesn't give any option about the second interview date for MCDG. So It's either a typo, or I really hope to be able to go to that one >< I wonder if anyone has gotten that alternate date.
-
OMG, wait which one was this? I might need the alternate too! So if they had more people for the alternate, they may actually do it, and we could meet each other!
-
Well, that makes it easier to accept another conflict that I had, and look forward to Stanford, lol. Also Yale BBS (MCGD) just sent out the official letter.
-
Congratulations! At this point, if I receive and e-mail from Harvard, I'll be in conflict with Michigan PIBS (which is already in conflict with UW CMB). Schools really need to try and talk to one another to not have these conflicts ><
-
I'm facing that same problem. I'm going to wait until next week. I'll let them know that it took time as I had a conflict and I tried resolving it with the other party. And this is mostly because I know that other party should be sending out invites today / this weekend. Also UMichigan PIBS just sent out more e-mails. I assume this is for CMB/Neuro oriented track people.
-
That's exactly what I was told over the phone yesterday.
-
Congratulations! @pot8o I thought all of the Stanford Biosciences sent it out in January, but I guess it's also by department then. Can you let us know what interview dates they offered?

I applied for different programs at each school as my main interest in is neuroregeneration. So some programs can cater to that better than others. And I also want a more rounded graduate experience as I have an understanding of neuroscience from undergrad; I'd rather build up my foundation in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology and take some more electives in the neurosciences. My Yale one happened to be MCGD, but their neuro program is great as well (I have friends in both programs). -
To both of you: I had that problem, then it changed, but now it says my GRE is unofficial. I contacted Stanford Biosciences a few weeks ago and they it would take them until around Christmas to organize all the files (I assume they give out applications to professors to look over the break and that is why they only announce invites after the New Year). They did say that if anything was missing or if anything was still pending (like they only had your unofficial scores but needed the official ones), they would audit each student and e-mail them to let them know what they need. So don't panic. You're not rejected. They're still getting around to it.

Each track does it separately, as they also have different interview weekend dates. -
I received the first interview weekend but it conflicts, so I'm going to try and ask for the second. Don't feel bad.

Congratulations to you too I was supposed to receive a call but didn't get it, so a PI e-mailed me and said the official letter will be sent soon. I'm in a bind because I was supposed to be abroad on that day, but I'll see if I can move my flight. Thank you~ -
Which department within PIBS did you choose? I haven't heard anything at all, and I did CMB and Neuro. Pretty much MGCD, and they still haven't officially emailed. They called, but I didn't receive the call, so they e-mailed. Not sure if they actually compete, but if they do I assume Bio would have another day so the dates don't conflict. Either way, it only seems like a two day interview.

Boom. MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Interview date is March 10th. -
6/13. I guess I'll go ahead and just add them to my signature as by now most people have heard back from half their schools, so I'm not a vector of anxiety causing woe.
-
I just called. They said tomorrow or Saturday. And yes, the interview dates are the same as last year. First weekend is 01/29/2016 - 01/31/2016, and the second is 02/12/2016 - 02/14/2016, but they will fly people out on the 28th, and 11th, respectively.
-
Forum search is your friend. But pretty much the answer is that if you can choose, it usually doesn't matter. You just want to let them know ASAP in case one fills up. Also, some will let you know if a certain weekend is catered to a certain department or track within an umbrella program. Also, just got another interview. 5/12 so far. Still in shock.
-
Yes. But I can't be sure whether they do rolling e-mails or not.
-
Giving you reputation for the smart answer. But real talk: Can all of us on Grad Cafe sign a petition so that all Council of Graduate Schools institutions do a thing like match day for med students? Like they all tell us when we are admitted on the same day (so they have to figure the apps out by then), and then to bid for dates each year (so that they don't conflict)? Arggg.
-
Yup. Now to make sure there are no conflicts by waiting until the 30th to respond, LOL.
