  1. zd0943, my main focus is on international trade , consulting, and finance in the private sector, I feel there would be many opportunities in California as well.  Whereas if I want a job in the public sector, maybe then it would be harder for someone coming out of UCSD.  Anyways, good luck with your decision !

  2. Do you think UCSD IR/PS is worth going to if you did not receive funding from the big name schools like Georgetown and JHU SAIS?

I think UCSD is perfect fit for me and so far, I prefer it. and cost would be so much easier to handle (in-state tuition), but am afraid I might limit my opportunities after graduation.  My main interest is working in the private sector (consulting or global trade or finance) or research.  Is it worth paying full price tag in SAIS or Georgetown or not? UCSD has a great career services placement and I'd also be getting a lot of hard skills, something that is useful for someone that doesn't have much relevant work experience like myself (1 yrs in software). What do you guys think?

  3. I only got a small amount of funding for Fletcher and none for Elliott school and American,  but still happy to get into most schools, including my first choice Georgetown MSFS.  I'll have to take on serious debt regardless the program (even UCSD IR/PS) but it will obviously be the better move for the future as I cannot make much and cannot get into my career of choice in my current status.  I plan to apply for outside scholarships and academic/off campus employment to take less loans once in school again.

I have a question for everyone though.  Would you take on more debt to go to a school like Georgetown (highly regarded as the best IR program alongside SAIS) or go to a school like Fletcher, American, or GWU Elliott for less money (they're not significantly cheaper as I didn't got 0-minimal funding)?  If I'm still paying close to full price for GWU or Fletcher but they are a little bit cheaper.  Fit-wise, I am all for Georgetown, but is it worth the discount to go elsewhere and sacrifice fit and also the Georgetown brand/prestige?

  4. I still am far from decided, but basically, I haven't received much funding (aside from Fletcher).

I have got into Georgetown SFS, GWU Elliott, Fletcher, UCSD IR/PS (CA resident).  I really like Georgetown due to fit, class size, and prestige, but wanted to know if it is worth the extra money to go there (and gamble on getting TA/RAships and 2nd year funding/external funding)???

Also, any knowledge on how easy it is to get funding opportunities like TAships and 2nd year funding at these schools.

  5. I got in, but waitlisted for financial aid. How likely do you think it is I'll at least get some funds? (I am an international student,so far funds differ highly from nothing at all to almost 85% of tuition) - I reallly am preferring MSFS!

Does it explicitly state if you are waitlisted for financial aid or is that the assumption if you didn't receive any?  Just curious so I can know if I was waitlisted or not!

  6. I was accepted for ITIP and asked that question directly to the admissions office. The reply was that Fellowship information would be coming out "soon".

I think it's safe to assume more people will be getting money and eventually those who will not will be notified.

Yet again, "soon" is pretty vague.

Yeah I got into ITIP too and hoping they're just lagging with responses haha

  7. Yeah hopefully!

ESIA did a lot of rolling admissions since Friday until yesterday, and fellowship/funding notifications always came separately. I'm personally thinking it's safe to be optimistic until the end of the week that we may get a funding email from them.

  8. I'd say go with the school that give you less debt between sis and elliott.  At the end of the day, if you network really well from both schools, you'll find something. Plus, American University is a huge school that's been around for quite some time, meaning lots of alumni are coming out of there and many of them are in DC and otehr areas. I'd prefer Elliott, but if SIS was considerably cheaper, your salary after graduation can go more towards you rather than loans, considering that you'll be recieving relatively the same pay after graduation from both schools and I don't see the trend that Elliott grads get paid substantially more than SIS grads.

  9. FYI, I just now received an email about a fellowship ($5K per semester).

Ah i see, cool! so most people are not getting it at the same time.  I just got my admission a few minutes ago, so I'm assuming if I do get something, it'll be later on or sometime this week.

  10. Maybe it's based off the speific programs applied for within the Elliott School.  I applied to ITIP so I don't know if anyone else got a response from them yet.  i haven't but not worrying too much as many people didn't get responses till the end of this week during last year's cycle.

  11. No, I've got the same problem. Oddly enough, it also says now on my application that I applied for a different program from what I originally selected. I don't know how that happened, but it is a bit concerning.

Either way, I know that last year American really strung along a lot of the applicants for several weeks, letting in the 'for sure' batch first and then parsing out the rest, mostly leading to rejections. It's an extremely frustrating approach. I guess we'll just see what happens.

Oh wow, well i guess it makes sense as they have so many people that apply.

  12. Thank you for all information, I will keep these in mind definitely and search on NYU's MA program more elaborately.

But I still have to think about alternatives of NYU in any case as it is not certain they will offer me an admission :) so in this case, I am still not sure if American SIS would be a good choice or not. On their website they stated that 2% of the MA graduates seeked for further education, but there is no information on where these people went, or what did they do. I would normally contact the university for some information but contacting is also forbidden. Therefore, I would really appreciate any idea from here :)

I think that SIS American is good for academic preparation if you gear your research and internship experience towards skills that give you preparation to get into the best PhD programs.  I think SIS has many research assistantship and teaching positions you can do, as well as the various amounts of think tanks in DC you can intern or work in while going to school at SIS.

My goal is also to get a PhD after my master's and that is what I would plan on doing. And yes, I applied to American and waiting to hear back.

  14. Just a note:  I'm applying to UCSD IRPS and if you get on campus housing, its highly subsidized.  You'll be spending 500 bucks/month for your own room average.  Off-campus, the same would possibly be 700-1000/month.  London is more expensiv, hearing what people have to say.   Also, if you choose the research route, UCSD will look better, but LSE is still a a great school. I'd just be skeptical in how U.S. employers would feel about a one-year degree from abroad and wouldn't take that risk.  Also, there's a higher chance of getting funding, RAs, TAs in UCSD, as most students get it and cover mose of their costs with it.  The negative thing is that you have to devote 20-25 hrs/week to TAing and RAing instead of your courses or internship, etc.

  15. I am also applying to UCSD IR/PS w/ an emphasis in Intl. Economics and Latin America (Fall 2015) and my current interest now is to pursue a PhD in Poli Sci or Econ after my masters.  I heard it's a good option if you want to either go into a PhD program or get a job immediately after.

I have a few questions for people who have attended UCSD IR/PS: 1) For financial assistance, are there TAships and RAships readily available for interested students (besides fellowships and loans)?    2) How marketable is the degree after you graduate if you want to get a job, especially in the East Coast?  Is IR/PS nationally reknowned or is it a local program?  How was your experience in gaining itnernship/work experience while in school and how was career services?
