Just popping back into the thread this year (I was on this forum over the two previous years, and I understand how difficult the waiting can be!)

I'm checking for a friend who was wait-listed this year, receiving a score of 11.9 from committee 4 (Education, linguistics, psychology, social work). We are trying to find out if she still has a chance of getting the fellowship. Can others from committee 4 let us know their scores and grant status? (So far I've just seen one post from a committee-4 fellowship recipient with a 13.4).

Also, a quick note of encouragement for those who were wait-listed or rejected. I was rejected with an 8 my first year applying as a direct applicant. Last year (1st year of PhD) I was offered a fellowship, which was upgraded to a CGS a few months later. So a lot can change even within a few months. I think what made the difference for me last year was having a strong reference letter from my current supervisor, going through 8 detailed drafts  of the proposal with several profs, and also emphasizing my non-academic work experience. Hang in there and keep trying everyone!

I got a CGS with a score of 17 from committee 4. Others in my department who were on the same committee got 9 (rejected), 11 and 12.3 (waitlisted) and 13.5 (fellowship). Hope this helps!

  2. A bit more information if it helps others:

As mentioned in a previous post, I got the CGS this year as a first-time applicant with a score of 17, committee 4. At the time of the application I was finishing up my MA, had two submitted/under-review publications (one for the "short pieces" section of a major journal and one for a very small conference proceeding), and 4 conference presentations -- two small, student-run ones and two professional rather than academic. Other applicants from my department had way more research contributions and I thought this would affect my chances. So I think that research background counts, but isn't a make-or-break deal -- it can be made up in other areas.

BTW, it turns out my MA supervisor (who's also our program director) has known for a few days, but wasn't allowed to tell me anything!

  3. For those who accepted the CGS-M at Concordia, have you heard anything about the Special Entrance Award for people coming? I emailed the graduate office twice in the past week but have not received a reply.

Another question -- if you have the CGS-M this year are you eligible to apply for FQRSC masters next year (2016-2017)? The latter's rules on stacking aren't very clear.

  4. Chose Concordia over McGill because of the larger SSHRC top-up. I really wanted to go to McGill for a change in environment (just finishing a 4-year undergrad at Concordia) but it's around a $5k difference in funding. I hope I've made a McGill alternate's day!

  5. I got offers from two universities and both are allowing me to defer my decision until SSHRC results come out. I just emailed the grad program coordinator at both uni and they said no problem at all.

I also was able to get updates on the SSHRC application (one of them recommended me yay!) so maybe you could just straight up ask about your status?

  6. Hi everyone, a university told me they "supported" my SSHRC Masters application; I'm not sure what this means. Did they recommend me to SSHRC? Or is "supported" just grad-speak for having acknowledged receipt? I'm an undergrad (final semester) and it's my first application so please pardon my ignorance.  :-P
