Personally, I find U of A's global health program to be a much stronger choice for a number of reasons. I listed a few reasons some pages back. Ultimately, it's all up to personal preferences, though. Feel free to send me a message if you want to chat about it more.

Hi everyone, I heard back from U of A today letting me know they would like to recommend me for admission to the MPH Global Health program! I'm surprised to hear back so soon since I interviewed on Thursday and they told me they'd get back to me in a couple of weeks. The e-mail says: "In order to guarantee your place in the MPH – Global Health program, you must inform us by April 14, 2015, whether or not you intend to accept this offer. After this date, open seats will be offered to applicants on our waiting list. Our recommendation for admission will go to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) where a final decision will be made. This recommendation will go to FGSR only if you confirm your acceptance of our offer." Just wanted to let everyone know that I will definitely be accepting (and declining my offer from SFU MPH Global Health)! Good luck to everyone else! And please send me a DM if you'll also be accepting... I look forward to getting to know you!

I am pretty sure we are the top 20 candidates and they will narrow it down to the final 10 after interviews. U of A's MPH Global Health cohort is very small (my co-worker who was in the program 5 years ago said her class only consisted of 5 people). Yes, I'm a Canadian and have my interview next week also. I have no idea what kind of questions they will be asking, but a few other people on the discussion board has offered some insight. I also don't know about any quotas for international students. Sorry!

Hello, nice to see another Global Health-specific person! I applied to both SFU and U of A as well! I was recommended for acceptance at SFU and also short-listed at U of A. If I had to choose between the two schools for a Global Health focus... after speaking with an SFU grad, a U of A grad, and 2 U of A current professors, I would definitely pick U of A. It has the only accredited School of Public Health. Class sizes are smaller (10 vs. 100 students), so you get a more intimate learning and really develop meaningful relationships with your classmates and professors. U of A professors, students, and grads are also well recognized and represented at global health conferences and organizations across Canada, and most likely internationally as well. For example, I went to the Canadian Conference on Global Health in Ottawa last year and there were so many presentations and keynote speakers from U of A, but I don't think I saw one person from SFU. I hope this helps!

Thanks! That's super helpful. Good luck with your applications! I also heard back from SFU yesterday. I received an e-mail informing that I've been recommended for admission, and that I'll receive an official offer of admission via e-mail and in the mail within 4 weeks. I agree that a lot of the Canadian public health programs are very similar in quality, so preference really comes down to personal interests. For me, I applied to U of A and SFU and the former is my first choice because a) it's closer to home cost of living is cheaper c) class sizes are smaller d) program length is shorter e) and I've met a few of its students and professors and found their work to be interesting. If you can, I suggest finding current/former students or staff to talk to in order to get a better idea of which school is the best fit. Or take a look at their websites to see if they've been involved in any public health projects that you find really interesting.

Hi, nice to see some other U of A applicants! I applied to Global Health at U of A (first choice) and SFU. dmonsta, do you have any more intel on what the phone interviews are like (e.g. questions, length)? Do they just call you or do you get some advance notice?

I applied to MPH Global Health at SFU and U of A. My co-worker who graduated from the U of A program in 2009 said she heard back about interviews around March, and about final acceptance around April. Not sure if the selection process is still the same, though, as I think there has been some restructuring at U of A.
