Chianti got a reaction from Page228 in Dyed Hair - Impressions?
In my last semester of undergrad, I did my hair from black to a bright blue ombre. I got several compliments from professors that thought it was cool/fun. As I was interviewing, the color had faded and no one minded. It faded to blonde by the time I started this semester, and I just had a dark purple/pink put in. My classmates all like it and no one has given me an odd look/bad comment.
Now I plan on re-bleaching about half of my hair and going for a brighter purple ombre again for the new year.
(As well as getting some new tattoos.  )

In short, feel out the programs in your interviews and when you first start at your new institution. Surely a streak won't be an issue!
(I'm still a little nervous to see how the department will react to a fairly bright purple though.)

I think there have been plenty of chances for people to lecture LD over why she wants to get married ect... and at this point i think its extremely immature to continue to lecture her. People's voices have been heard.

The core of her question is an ernest one: how to be friends with someone you are jealous with. I think we should be focusing on answering that one.

Chianti got a reaction from ZebraFinch in writing 6.0 needed for political theory?
It won't hurt, but I don't see why it would be "highly desirable." The kind of writing you do for the GRE is a joke and does not indicate your actual skill at all--it just shows how well you take the exam. The writing sample and statement of purpose give the adcom a better idea of where you stand in terms of writing. (Can you tell I think lowly of standardized testing?  )

I suggest doing the quick weight loss program of losing ~200 lbs of boyfriend. Works miracles!

Beer and meditation.  Usually not at the same time.  Maybe a long walk.  However, sometimes nothing makes it better or more manageable and you just have to grit your teeth and keep on keeping on.  Some days are just hard.

Chianti reacted to ProfLorax in Malicious cohort member...should I seek help from my advisor?
I don't necessarily see how she is acting "maliciously" toward you, but I do see how her actions are hurtful. She's actively excluding you socially and intellectually from your cohort and your project. That shit hurts! I know it does; I've been in similar work situations. Your hurt is valid. Unfortunately, until she actively disrupts your work, I don't know how helpful your advisor will be. I would focus on building a supportive, productive environment without her. Sure, she makes plans with your peers, but you can also make plans with them. Don't allow this colleague to dictate the tone of your grad school experience.

In the immortal words of Taylor Swift, until the situation escalates, Shake It Off! I know this can be hard. I'm sensitive, so rude and mean-spirited behavior really affects me. But at the end of the day, the haters gonna hate hate hate, and I just don't have time for that shit! Also, sometimes confidence and a general "shake it off" approach to workplace bullies can disorient and even silence them.

One caveat: If the conflict escalates, and her rudeness turns into harassment, sabotage, or bullying, then yes, absolutely talk to your advisor.

There's no magic cure for this, but I find it helps to think of the people I admire who did take different paths and found success on their own terms. There are always outliers, and they often have the most interesting stories. You have the perspective you have now because you've fought your own unique battles. Embrace it as much as you can, and find a way to make it work for you.
