  1. I am finishing my PhD later this year and got approved for NSERC PDF starting next year.

I have a question here: with NSERC PDF, how likely is it to find a position in top US universities? Does it make a difference if you have PDF?

Also, how many of you guys are planning to go to US? I am mostly inclined to stay in Canada...

Any advice will be greatly appreciated...

  2. Isn't MITACS offering way much more money than NSERC? like 70,000 annually?

I have just received the acceptance email from MITACS. I also got the NSERC letter yesterday approving the NSERC PDF, now I am confused: which would be better to accept?

Simhod, hope for the best for your application!

  3. You may want to contact NSERC directly to make sure they were sending the letter to your current address.

    Hi all,

Could I ask whom didn't get the PDF letter by now? I'm currently living outside Canada. I'm not sure where NSERC will send the letter. To my Canadian address, or to my current address. Any info. about that?

  4. I guess you'll have to be registered as a student to receive the scholarship.

If in your school graduating in May requires you to register for the summer term, I guess you'll be covered.

Here's a quick question for everyone...

I was awarded a CGS-M, but I'm not sure when I should start it (either May or September). I'd prefer to start in September 2010 and have it go to September 2011, but I'll be graduating (knock on wood) in May 2011. I'll be moving somewhere in August '11 for my Ph.D, so having the NSERC funding over the summer would be great. Will the NSERC funding stop as soon as I graduate, or will it keep going regardless for the entire year? If it's going to stop as soon as I graduate, I might as well start it in May of this year.

    Thanks for your input!

  5. lol

Well, we don't actually know you, and haven't read your publications. All we can judge your work on is the posts you have left here... which actually contain grammatical errors ("I spent enough efforts and time", "the problem does not rely there"...), so... it should not be surprising that we are suggesting writing as a possible cause. Likewise, your NSERC reviewers have not read your publications; they only have your application to go on.

We are just trying to help, because you asked. Please don't take out your frustrations on us.

  6. And sometimes they promote a Canadian PGS holder to CGS.

I have a friend who was turned down for a PGS in the first round, and was then offered one in June. They didn't even tell her she was on a waiting list.

  7. Congs!! I guess my letter will arrive tomorrow (I am in KW).

Hey guys, I have been following these posts for the last couple of days. Good news: here in Ottawa, I got my letter from NSERC today! It is for a CGS-D, which I have trade for a PGS because I am headed to the US; this means more money for somebody else though! Good luck everyone!

  8. Exactly. Even OGS results can be checked online. CIHR too.

Yeah. Furthermore, why do they insist on online applications that must be submitted physically?!

Maybe NSERC wants to keep Canada Post busy. ;)

  9. I guess it'll arrive tomorrow !!!!!!!!!!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US!

I called NSERC and asked about the results of NSERC PDF, they said you should receive a letter shortly. The resuts have already been mailed! cross the fingers!

  10. I guess pdf this year would be particularly competitive due to the tough season in academia.

    Hi Guys,

I have applied for NSERC PDF 2010-2011. I have 2 1st author (submitted), 3 co-author journal (Accepted), and 12 conferences (7 1st author, 5 co-author). What are chances to get the scholarship? Any idea ...

  11. I guess it totally depends on major and competition of a particular year...

  12. Wish somebody would tell me:)

  13. Many thanks, bhdavis! So there is no limit on the money you receive on top of NSERC PDF? and it is possible to apply for other paid postdoc positions and still hold a PDF? sounds too good to be true ;P

It seems that you are waiting for PDFs too. Good luck to both of us ;)

Yes, I'm pretty sure that your supervisor is allowed to pay you on top of your NSERC PDF salary, as long as you're being paid for the same work you're already doing. I've known NSERC PDFs who were able to improve their income by lecturing, so unless the policy has changed a lot, I can't imagine this as a problem.

  14. Just saw this from the NSERC website:

We were also gratified to see the announcement of a new Post Doctorate Fellowships (PDF) Program that will greatly increase our ability to make Canada a prime destination for research and innovation excellence.

Anyone knows what this is? I didn't see any changes on the website yet.

Does it mean that they are increasing the fellowship amount ;P? ($40,000 seems a bit low now... and have to pay taxes too...)
