  1. BTW you owe me some Hesiod!

I think he was referring to Hesiod saying that after they opened Pandora's box and subsequently managed to close it, the last thing left at the bottom of the box was hope (elpis)

  2. Oh, I think nobody sells himself as a philosopher... I always say that I have a "licenciatura" (a five year degree) in Philosophy.

And no, I only have read some few things of Prof. Gill. Book chapters mostly.

    What about you, Marcus?

I have a BA and an MA, both in Classical Philology and Ancient History, from a European university. I also have a Master's in Classics from a U.S. institution. My main focus lies in Archaic and Classical Greek poetry!

  3. Well, I am a Platonist. I love everything signed by Plato: the letters, the dialogues, the agrapha dogmata (!).

However, my undergraduate thesis is focused on Republic, and specially on the causal relationship between poetic performance, psychological pathos and behavior. Having this relationship in mind, I blend the classical approach with a more philosophical one, integrating new elements taken from theory of emotions with heavy work on Plato's use of verbs, adjectives and participles.

Until two weeks ago, I always felt that I was a crazy latina with a taste for weird blends. Now I know I'm not alone.

That is great! Have you been in touch with Professor Gill? I didn't sell myself as a philosopher, but I did some work on philosophy in undergrad.

  4. The one who posted about Brown was interviewed, which is different from accepted (ex. me and Stanford). Yet, when candidates are interviewed is because the committee has already made the decisions (interviewed candidates become accepted or waitlisted, but rarely rejected).

Or maybe you are a TERRIFIC candidate and nobody needs to make you an interview. Sounds rare, though.

As far as I know, what they do at Brown is they make a long list of potential candidates and then skim that list. These days, they should still be in the long list phase of the process. Which is why I'm a little surprised. But no, I didn't think I was so good I wouldn't get an interview. I don't really think that ever happens.

  5. No, I just saw the post in the results page. There are always more people posting in the results page than there are people in the Forums. So not everybody who posts results also posts stuff in the Forum.

It just seems a little odd that no one has posted on the results page about getting invited to prospective student weekend.

  6. I personally would consider Brown as lost too, since someone has already received an interview offer from their ancient History program, which I believe is part of their Classics Department.

Has this person posted anything in the forums?

  7. I wonder if Brown's anthropology department is at all linked to Classics? Someone reported that Brown has made its decisions but they won't go out until next week due to the impending blizzard. In any case, it's interesting to think about.

Thanks! Do you know who reported this, and whether they were referring to the Classics program?

  8. RV, MH: Yale Classical Philology has sent out invitations to campus. I'm sorry I didn't specify above.

Where is this information coming from? I was told they would email between this week and the next.

  9. Hello everyone,

I am applying to a few graduate programs that have a deadline of January 1st. No time is specified in the information page and I was wondering if anyone knew whether the materials are due before or after midnight. I could use another day to go over a few things, but I can't make up my mind!

    Thanks,

    P.
