That's true! I'm doing research with an undergrad professor now that is in my area and I still refer to it as "my research". I know, at least in this area, with 18 credit hours of Master's work I can get an adjunct position here. I'm looking for a PhD for sure. That is a great idea about pairing with local art communities! I always worry about what-ifs. I do need to stop that! It got worse when I had kids and again when my husband got cancer the first time. I have to plan for the whole family, so it's a lot of stress. I guess I can't change the outcome at this point. I'll find out soon enough if I am planning a move, preparing for coursework, or looking for a new direction this year.

I wish the sites were clear about which they prefer. I also find it frustrating that sites aren't always updated to tell students if the professor is accepting students.

That is really cool! I wonder how long it takes the incorrect order to become the new way of speaking? Not only that, but once it takes hold, how would that change social beliefs? For example, we always say it's not just "black and white" but we never say "white and black". Why do we do it that way? I like these ideas! I don't mind rambling by the way. I respect passion within one's work! It's inspiring. -
@ Psych face, thanks for the reply! One of my PhD applications actually had a box that asked if I would want to be considered for a terminal Master's if I was not accepted as a PhD student. I did check "yes" there, but I'm not sure if I want to pick up the family and move for a Master's. However, I know I'd have the option to go for PhD after and I think that I would be accepted once they see my work, but who knows? There is a Master's program close by I am considering. Luckily, the applications aren't due until June, so I can wait to see if I get in somewhere else before I spend the money to apply there. I have a few years worth of projects going on with the Chair of Psychology at my undergrad institution right now, so that will keep me busy if I did take a year off.

I love that! I have actually wanted to look into cross cultural differences of children's books and even movies. Being a Harry Potter fan you might already know this, but J.K. Rowling was instructed to change the title for American (and Canadian, I think) from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I thought that was interesting and it got me to wondering what else is different? I would like to know more about this. A friend of mine has become recently interested in studying linguistics in a sense, but in a different way than you. He wants to look into how word usage might reinforce stereotypes or create more division of groups than intended. I love the idea of studying online language processing. This is definitely important in this day and age! -

I don't think it sounds boring at all! I love memory. A new professor at my school studies autobiographical memory and it sounds interesting. I have several interests. False confessions and eyewitness testimony both sound fascinating! Before I decided on seeking an academic career in psychology, I considered looking into forensic psychology. It took me forever to actually decide on academia. -

That's fantastic! Don't let it depress you. I just started typing mine. I started emailing or texting myself ideas as I get them because I always forget if I wait too long! I hate getting to my computer and thinking..."Now, what was that idea?" Sometimes I'll go back to my ideas and think... "Wow, was I serious?" HAHA It's pretty funny...especially the "after 3 a.m." me. I'm glad you replied! I was really hoping more people from all different areas would post here. We're all in the same boat and we might be able to help each other find those interested in the same research. I'm not into developmental all that much, but I really like the idea of studying aesthetic preferences of children and even doing twin studies to see if there is a genetic component to preferences or something like that. I would also love to see how preferences or interests change over the years and biases at different ages. It would be interesting. I love the fantasy-reality ideas. I have two children (13 and 9) and it's fun to see how they view things. Peripheral persuasion kicks in at a young age... my oldest once asked me (I was 24 at the time), "Mom, are you a senior citizen? If you're a senior citizen, then you need Life Alert!" Kids! They can be hilarious. --About the Ravenclaw reference... no matter how many times I tried to be sorted, it always came down to Ravenclaw. Of course, I wanted Gryffindor for such a long time. However, I have decided that I'll accept what the sorting hat says and move on. I read the description; Ravenclaw is pretty cool. -
Hey everyone! I don't know about all of you, but I'm pretty stressed out and have been spending way too much time worrying over whether I'm going to be informed of rejection, acceptance, interview, or waitlist... I thought that if anyone is interested, maybe we can tell our research areas of interest to meet like-minded people and possible collaborators of research for the future. I'll start... I have really broad interests. I would love to study aesthetics and creativity. With a faculty member, I did research on biases in artistic preferences (particularly movies and music) and presented that at an aesthetics conference in New York. We are working on phase two of the project now looking at potential biases in critic ratings. I have several research ideas relating to aesthetics and they cover all different disciplines in psychology--social, cognitive, personality, etc. I'm also interested in creativity, although the faculty at my school do not research that, so I haven't had as much experience in that area. I would like to study artists (I'm a visual artist). I'm also a lover of evolutionary psychology and aesthetics. I have other interests that include emotion, intelligence, motivation, achievement, effort, interest, memory, stereotyping and prejudice, and so on. I have about five pages of research questions right now and I continuously add to that on a regular basis. What about all of you? Any aesthetics researchers out there?

Are there any others on here that applied to UNC Greensboro? I'm just curious to see if anyone has heard anything.

Thank you for your reply! I hope everything went well! -
I actually did read a few manuals for schools that had descriptions of certain types of aid and it said that GRE was important for certain ones. However, I don't think any of them would expect that to be the only criteria for judging.
-
I've noticed that the scoring isn't really consistent. It's really frustrating when an near perfect GRE and GPA is rejected. Several scores that seem lower have gotten interviews. I actually emailed someone at one of my schools to find out if my scores were acceptable. He said they were fine for the department, but that each professor might have their own cut off score.
-
All of the schools that I applied to had cut off scores of 50th percentile. I got 84th in verbal, 60th in quant, and 93rd in writing. I really don't think these programs should put that much stock in the GRE scores to be honest. I think they look for their cut off score and then after that they don't care. GRE score is not even a good predictor of graduate school success. I do have strong LORs though. If I get denied at all three schools this year I'll retake the GRE to aim for the 80th and above in everything, but I really would rather focus on research more. I think that and maybe working on my personal statements and finding better fits would be helpful. Hopefully I won't have to worry about it, but since I only applied to three this year I am already getting a list together for next year....

Psych Results Page Questions/Clarifications

I would also like the info for the Indiana University Bloomington POIs as well if the posters do not mind sharing. I understand if you don't. Thanks! -
I see on the results page that a couple of people have posted that they have interviews at IUB. Would either of you mind sending a message with your POI? If not, I understand! Has anyone else heard anything?
-
I got a 155 on the Quant. and I got an A+ in my statistics course....and I'm the stats TA now. Quite honestly, I don't feel that the quantitative section is full of math we need in graduate school. There is a section that is important, but it's only a small part of the whole. I wish they made the test more relevant to actual statistical analysis. My score was 60th percentile. I wish it were better and if I get rejected from all of the schools I applied to this time around, I do plan to study and retake the test. I do not think it is an accurate measure of what it needs to measure for our purposes. I think it is a generic measure because they can't make tests for each individual discipline. That's just my thoughts! If it makes you feel any better, a 155, according to the GRE makers, when compared with other students trying to go for psychology is actually in the 80th percentile. In my opinion, our scores should be compared with scores of those we are in competition with, not the scores of people trying to be engineers, chemists, English professors, or any other profession.

I figured that was how it worked. Honestly, it seems pretty logical for clinical to be mandatory.
-
I actually used the results search page to look at my schools and social psychology results. It seems that most of them were either rejected or accepted without an interview. I was wondering, I think it's normal for clinical to have early responses...maybe because they are more likely to offer interviews? Does anyone see this trend or am I completely off?
-
This is also my first cycle. I actually tried searching for my schools on the results page and found that they tend to post social Psych results in February/March. Clinical was earlier for each of those schools. I think they all provide funding for five years if accepted (if I read their sites correctly!). I really hope that I hear from one of them soon, but I'm not holding my breath.
-
That's what I figured. If I don't get in this year, then I will start researching other options (which I actually have already started doing, just in case). I'll message graduate students before applying next time...
-
Now that applications are in and there is no going back, would you recommend still contacting them or waiting and only contacting if I am accepted?
-
Thank you! I think I'm more nervous about contacting students more than POIs. I'm not really sure what to say to graduate students, but I think I'll try contacting a few and see how it goes.
-
Honestly, I have so many interests that I feel I could fit in at quite a few places as long as I felt the POI was supportive. I was wondering about contacting graduate students, but my worry is that they will see this as badgering them and will suggest to the POI not to accept me. I wanted to contact them to ask a few questions, but I was not sure of the correct questions to ask and how informal or formal to be with them. Any suggestions?

I really appreciate all of the encouraging replies. I don't like the waiting, but the semester is about to start and I still have my TA job for statistics; it will keep me busy! If I get rejected I will study for the GRE and try again. I'll also be able to apply to more schools that way. Our lives should be a little less hectic with a year off if I get rejected. The doctors said he would be back to himself in about two years and he is already getting there. I'm staying positive! Whatever happens, I will get my Ph.D. eventually! Best of luck to all of you as well!
