Ok-So I have two hard offers, a wait list that I am optimistic about based on my rank on the list, and one that I have an interview with and am optimistic about. Two are in Atlanta, my current city. Two are not. Each have their own pros/cons. I also have a family and a husband that would have to seek licensure if we move out of state; that would take time and have a significant impact on our family standard of living. What to do?
#1
UCSD – Global Health
Exact area of interest
Good opportunities for publishing in high-ranked journals based on research content
Only guaranteed 2 yrs. funding possibility teaching in 3/4 year
Graduate at least a year sooner than all other
POI seems good
High cost of living + huge move for family
Will have to REALLY reduce lifestyle for a year until spouse could get license there
Beach city
#2
USF - Epi
Degree is very flexible; could likely get position anywhere with the content area
Curriculum does not go with my strengths
Standard of living would go down a lot for family
Beach city
Funding stipend is $5k less than all others
#3
Emory – Public Health
Waitlisted
Highest ranked
Guaranteed development funds for conference travel
Guaranteed funding 5 years
no assistantship work required for $$ for first 2 years; just classes and lab
Would need a couple classes in the summer to beef up knowledge base
A few faculty that I clicked with for options to work with
Degree is in interest realm but way narrower
No family change
#4
Georgia State – Health Promotion Behavior
Pending interview scheduled
Very little research/ travel funds allocated
Great mentor; would be pleasant degree program guaranteed
Guaranteed funding for 3 years , likelihood more as needed
Opportunities to publish somewhere
Not area of interest
Maybe slight flexibility to branch out in area of interest
No family change
