Does anyone know how being an out of state student or a Canadian student affects you during the admissions process? Whether you're more or less likely to get in, or whether they actually care?

I'm applying to University of Iowa, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, University of Pittsburgh, University of North Carolina -- Chapel Hill, University of Nebraska--Lincoln, University of North Dakota, and Minot State University. Any info on these?
