  1. What do you mean by "I have 4 research interests"? Are there four specific questions within a subfield that interest you, or do you have interests in four separate subfields, or something else? If it's four related questions within a subfield, then more than likely the same people who can support one will be able to support the others. They don't to have studied your particular question to be able to advise research on it. If it's four separate subfields, then that is most likely too much and it would not be advisable to write about them all in one SOP. Unless they are directly related to one another, they would probably sound disconnected and therefore make you sound like someone who doesn't have their act together. That, in turn, would make you a risk and not a good fit. In that case, I would suggest picking two and expanding on them. But you still have to ask yourself, in case you really do have so many different interests, if you are ready for grad school and if you are able to make good choices for where you should attend. It may be helpful to sit down and try to narrow down your interests: is there a common thread that links them? If so, try and write about that. Your specific interests would then just be examples of a more general question of interest. And again, in that case, it's probably better pick just a couple and expand on why they are important and interesting than have a longer list but have it be shallow.

Thanks a lot, fuzzylogician. Do you mind if I pm you my research interests and discuss there?

  2. I am planning to apply to quite a number of grad schools in the States and currently drafting my statement of purpose. Assuming that I have 4 research interests, and then when I am writing the fit paragraph, most of the time I can link each faculty to two of my interests. Is this ok? OR should I simply delete the interests I cannot link to the faculty? I'm not sure what the panel will think.

    Thanks!

  3. Thank you very much for your notes!

I sent an email to Michigan and the admission chair said they are in the process of reviewing the applications! Do you think they invite international students too the campus visit too?

And i sent an email to Connecticut a week ago but have not received anything yet! Does it mean rejection? :(

Don't mean to discourage you but I think they have already contacted all shortlisted students (I applied to Michigan too but I wasn't one of them:( ) I'm just waiting for the rejection email that should come later this month (according to what happened last year).

  4. It does make me upset that some departments just don't bother to inform some applicants until months later that, oh hey, in case you somehow didn't get it, you're not in. We all put so much time and effort into the applications that we send to these places that it seems like the least they could do is send us notification of acceptance or rejection in a timely manner.

    Agreed.

  5. Same here.

They started reviewing all applications way before. I sent them questions through that question window in the left side besides the checklist in December. And the person in charge told me they started reviewing all materials once you had submitted your application (regardless of the completeness of your checklist). So I am assuming they are just holding the final acknowledgement of rejection to all other applicants. The status, just ignore it (my opinion).

I am counting McGill as lost (even I wish it's not the case...

This just makes the whole thing more disappointing  :(

  6. So I was expecting McGill to send me a rejection email or to change my application status from "submitted" to "rejected" but guess what, the status was changed to "in review" today. Do they do this even though they have already made a decision? Like to show that they do review applications? It seems rather odd to me.

  7. Yes I think it would be a good idea to inform the graduate office.

I had the same problem with CUNY (one of my referee totally forgot about it even after I sent him a reminder the week before).

I wrote the graduate secretary about it and they told me I still had a few days.

Thanks. I did what you suggested and really hope they haven't started the process.

  8. Something like that happened to me a few years ago when I was applying for my MA. Well, I'm sure it's not uncommon, unfortunately. I was freaking out, naturally, so I wrote an email to another professor I knew, explaining the situation and asking if it'd be possible for her to write me a very last-minute recommendation (I also described my academic goals and interests and all). I didn't know her super well because I only took a class with her, but I sat up front and did really well so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Anyway, she helped me out and submitted the letters within a few days and I'm forever grateful to her.

Basically, I suggest asking someone else if they can help you out so at least your applications will be complete.

Finding another one to write for me is kind of a problem since he is the only professor of my MA program that actually replied to my email. If I ask another prof of my undergraduate degree, I feel like giving an impression to the admission committee that there must be sth wrong with my MA.

He has been kind enough to write for me for the other applications but I guess this one caught him at his busiest time. I just hope he will finish it soon :(

  9. Does anyone know what will happen if one of the referees still hasn't submitted his reference a week after the official deadline? I submitted the application like almost a month before the official deadline (which was last week). I did contact my supervisor about it and he said he would do it last week but he didn't. So I contacted him again this Monday asking him if he could do that within this week and he said ok, but so far he still hasn't submitted it. I don't wanna send him another email AGAIN this week but I'm kinda worried if the admission committee has already started screening the applications.

Do you think I should ask the graduate officer about this?

  10. Had a Skype "interview" with one of my POIs at McGill today. She asked how I got interested in linguistics. The rest was mostly about my research interests, especially because my interests relate to a few things they do there, so it felt like a nice conversation about linguistics rather than my character or something. She encouraged me to contact them if I have any other questions about anything at all, so I think I'll try to do that to show even more enthusiasm (if a question really comes up).

I don't know what it all means, but considering I've been so nervous about this I'm going to be patient and work on my current school stuff. :P

Mind telling me who your POI is?

  11. I did my undergrad at Michigan, and when I was talking to my advisor there the other day she mentioned that the full admissions committee was meeting at the very end of the month to decide who to invite to the screening weekend.  So don't expect to hear anything from them until February!

Good to know! The wait is really the worst

  12.  I don't know about that, I've heard different opinions in the linguistics community!

Also, Chiki thanks for the encouragement! We'll see! Keep us posted on how your interviews go! Let's hope for the best (for all of us :) )

    Yes! And best of luck!

I don't think this is true! Not in my experience, anyway -- I've never approached anyone and I'm also an international student (and I was also accepted to UBC, one of the schools you listed). So don't lose hope!

Thanks! This certainly makes me feel a lot better! While I'm preparing myself for the bad news, I sure don't mind being surprised  :D

  13. Where did you apply? People don't send interview requests all around at once and it usually seems to be pretty informal. There's still hope!

He said he read my file with interest and wanted to talk to me on the phone, that's it really.

Pretty sure no hope from McGill. Haven't been contacted yet. I didn't even know there would be an interview! Now waiting for UBC and Michigan.

The worst thing is I didn't know about this forum until after all the applications! I would definitely have done more and applied to more if I knew.

I heard the chance of getting an offer is basically close to zero if you haven't approached any POIs before the application, AND I'm an international student, so now it's like waiting for the rejection emails  <_<

I know I can apply again next year but this feeling just sucks, big time :(

    Hooray!

    Congratz!!!

  14. They have similar research interests, but I had one main POI and I guess the other one wants to interview me for fun. He said he was very impressed with my app, maybe that's why.

Hi, newbie here. I applied to some schools for this fall but so far no calls, nothing whatsoever :( But it's nice to see people here posting about getting emails from POIs!

Just curious, what did your main POI talk to you about?
