Hm, that is interesting. I sent 8 e-mails and heard from all but 1. Perhaps professors are bombarded with e-mails as most of the semesters begin this week or next week. As long as your e-mail didn't seem generic, I think you are fine. I hope you stated why you think that you would be a good fit for the program. Also, some professors don't want to respond to a question such as "Do you have openings for next semester?" as they may not be sure of funding and what not. I wouldn't take it personally.
-
I think that you have very high chances of being accepted. Professors love to see diversity in applicants and an applied mathematics background is helpful for making contributions to understanding sound and using technology. Good luck! I think you are fine!

@musicologypl - You still have time! No need to start worrying until the end of February!
-
Okay, I see- thank you! Also, are we referencing my cumulative GPA, or my GPA at my current institution? I did transfer after my first year.
Thanks again- I swear I won't bombard you with more questions.
Cumulative GPA. Hmm, if you transferred your first year - they may not consider your first year GPA at all. Admissions committees usually only care about the last 60 credit hours - that GPA.
If you have a nice cumulative GPA, it only strengthens your app.

Thanks a lot, theory411! I really appreciate the input.
And just to clarify, do you mean to say that I'm allotted one Withdrawal-while-failing (WF), and that I should be prepared to explain the Withdrawal-while-passing (WP) grades? Thanks again.
Yeah, well - you might be able to wiggle your way out of the WPs. WPs are suspicious because you were passing and you withdrew...could it be you had a family problem? overload yourself with too many classes? (It might be in your favor to explain the WPs). WFs explain themselves.

I was waiting in a Port Everglades (Florida) cruise terminal...using the wifi, about to board my ship... when suddenly I received an acceptance e-mail Made my trip a million and one times better!

I don't need the class for graduate school, it's just a ridiculous requirement of the school that I go to (in my opinion).
Mind you, I already have one other "WF", and two other "WP"s. I'm not sure how this factors into this decision, if at all. I realize this obviously isn't ideal. Also, my first year was pretty rough, but I've had mostly A's since then.
Don't worry about the WF (universities allow you one free one). WP - you might wanna explain those? (I had two Ws on my transcripts - I don't think it negatively impacted my application). Don't worry about your first or second year (one of my Ws was in my second year). Admissions committees care about your last two years.
It really depends on the university you attend. If you have a GPA over 3.5, don't worry about the D or the Ws. If you are pulling a 3.0, and you are dropping non-stop - it might raise some flags. I am not really sure of your situation. I would take the D in the language class - it's better than 4 Ws. Grad schools don't like to see giving up.
-
It's not in my major. It's a required foreign language class, and I'm a Psychology major.
Do you need a foreign language class for a Psychology program in grad school?
If not, take the D. For at least, it shows you are willing to stick through a rough time and not give up or fear the D. I had a friend accepted into Yale with a D on his transcript in some class that had nothing to do with the field. Don't worry about it. As long as you have a lot of As and Bs - one D won't make a difference, in my opinion.

Hi everyone,
I haven't been able to find any reliable information on this.
I'm hoping to get into graduate school. If I withdraw now, I will receive a grade of "WF", as I am currently failing, but I'm quite certain I can manage a "D" in the class if I stay it out.
I'm not sure which is preferable for a graduate school application. If there's no difference, I'd prefer to just stay in the class, as I can no longer get a tuition refund for the credits. Programs I had considered applying to are: Master's in Social Work, Master's of Education in Counseling, Master's of Psychology in Counseling, and Master's of Psychology in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.
I'd greatly appreciate any input!
Is the class in your major? If not, stay in the class and get a D.

I've been checking the results postings here and am seeing other people get admitted to programs I've applied to, but it's complete radio silence on my end - I've only heard back from one school so far. Should I be nervous? Or is this normal?
Well, if it's any consolation, two of the schools on your list I applied to and they both told me that we won't find out 'til late February - mid March. But I am in a different major
-
Your interview is in Ethnomusicology or in Theory? I think that might make a difference.
According to a theory friend's friend, Northwestern gave out interviews already.
-
Nice to read a thread specifically about music apps (and the seemingly endless waiting game!) I'm a musicology major from New Zealand So far, I've heard back from one of the schools I've applied to - with an acceptance and a fellowship. Haven't heard anything from my other four schools though! I'm hoping I'll hear something before I fly out in March to visit the campus that has offered me a place, so that I'll be able to look around more than one university - given I'm traveling over 24 hours to get there in the first place
That is wonderful. Congratulations! Which one would that be?
I am so happy for you!!!

In my day (2012 Fall), Columbia accepted some musicology/theory folks without interviews and rejected at least one person who was invited to interview. That person was me. I'm not bitter. Nope.
I wonder if the same holds these days.
-
Columbia interviews?! Do you mean they interview to Ethnomusicology only or to all programs music related?
My friend is there for Theory now and he said they interviewed him last year. I cannot say for Musicology.
-
Thanks, though I'm assuming no news is bad news. Everyone I asked about the interview was kind of surprised, too. I don't how many "finalists" they pick for interviews. Does anyone have any idea?
It's usually about 6-8 finalists, but I don't know the exact stats for Stanford. But, hope that gives you an accurate approximation or an idea.
-
Don't worry too much about the lack of interviews. A lot of music theory schools don't do interviews (or, like Yale, sometimes interview and sometimes don't).
Oh, thanks a lot. Yeah, I didn't apply to Yale or Eastman or UChicago or Northwestern... I applied to 2 schools for Masters and I am guess they won't be having interviews.

Congratulations to all the UChicago candidates!!
Haha, to the few people above. I have only had one rejection and no interviews.

No, I wouldn't e-mail them. LieutenantBeefheart is absolutely correct. That might end up doing you more harm than good. You don't want to seem desperate. You want schools to be fighting over you, not you fighting for them.
I'm sorry, but the only people you should be contacting these days are the admissions representatives to find out where your application stands.
-
I was wondering if that is the case.
Will it do any good?
I think sending an email might put a name in the mind of the POI when he will be looking at the applications.
Also, how will the chances of admission be affected if you never contact the POI?
It depends on your degree program. I would be wary about contacting your POI after the application has been submitted, you should have done that before. Sometimes professors see it as bothersome. You shouldn't be asking questions about the program after you submitted your application. I hope this helps - that is just what I have been advised.

Congratulations to the UChicago Ethno admit!
-
I'm seeing one school that I've applied to has notified probably 5-10 people (taking into account people not on grad cafe). Of course, I'm over thinking it and taking it as an omen that I'm not going to be accepted. So today's rationalization is "well, at least that is the place I was least excited about having to move to."
Hahahahah, that's how I rationalized my first and currently only rejection. "I wouldn't have went there anyway, if I had any other option." Haha.

This was from Yale University webpage. It was awhile ago that I had saved to my computer. Doesn't say musicology specifically. Yale PhD in music includes Ethno, Theory and Musicology.... am I correct? Comp at Yale is DMA through School of Music.
Yes, you are correct.
Any guidelines for a campus visit for PhD application?
