  1. Hi everyone -

I am seeking advice on choosing a lab which in turn affects which school I choose - I have spent the past two years after graduating working in the pharma industry on the molecular/cellular side of things. I am considering transitioning to the medical device field, which I have little experience with but am excited about. My primary concern is that I am not sure the career path that this will lead me to - what kinds of doors could research in devices open up? It is much more 'engineering' heavy than the field I am in now, and I am interested in returning to industry after my PhD.

Any insight into this and how to choose a lab or school would be great! The devices lab and the PI of this lab excite me a lot, more than the lab I have been matched into at my other choice school (school B). However, I am more attracted to the program and overall school of school B more.. I don't know what to prioritize and how to choose! Any insight or advice greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!

  2. By the way, at the schools where I interivewed I was directly told on the 2nds interview day to expect an offer for every school I eventually got into.  Not sure if all schools are that forthcoming, but you will definitely get a sense of whether you have a connection with the program/people and they with you.  You do not want to go somewhere without that connection so if it isn't there, don't worry, it's for the best.

    I interviewed at:

    UPenn

    Columbia

    MIT

    JHU

    RICE (post acceptance)

Anyone having questions about the process at these schools, let me know!

Thanks for your help! Was your UPenn interview very technical? I am interviewing with some professors who I haven't spoken to previously and didn't necessarily request, which has never happened to me before so I am a little concerned.. any insight appreciated! Thanks so much!

  3. Does anyone have any insight into Harvard's engineering program? I know it is not as traditional (at least for bio/biomedical engineering) as some other programs, but obviously Harvard has great resources. Just wondering what people generally thought! Thanks!

  4. Seems like they've had an acceptance or two. I'm beginning to think it's time to count them out. Historically, they've sent out acceptances Feb 7-16ish, with rejections coming in March. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I've stopped trying to leave space for a visit there. Good luck, I hope they're just being slow.

Do you know much about their program in general? I know it's more of a non-traditional engineering program so I was curious if anyone had any insight into it. Thanks!

  5. I've had one conflict so far, I just told them I had already committed to visiting another program but I wouldn't want to pass up the opportunity to visit both, and asked to work out another time that I could come for a visit. It's a common problem, they will be used to dealing with it and they will not be offended at all.

Thanks so much! One is an accepted students weekend and one is an interview weekend - originally I was thinking I would go to the interview since I'm not in yet, but on the other hand, it's not as if the other school can reschedule an accepted students weekend.. do you have any suggestions which to attend and which to try and reschedule? Do you think rescheduling an interview affects your chances?

    Thanks again!
