I wish I could afford to live alone - I'm the type that needs to not talk to any humans once I leave school.
 
That being said, I'm glad I moved into a room with roommates at first. Everyone in the house was a transplant, and that helped me as far as understanding the adjustments of living in the town.
 
Like everyone said, don't even worry about the possibility of not making friends.
 
Also, here's a tip: if you end up needing to look for roommates, try to live with the most educated people you can. Freshman won't usually understand why you are spending so much time with school when you could be drinking. My best roommate I ever had did his Master's at the school I went to, and that's no coincidence. However, assholes exist at every level of education.
