  1. Hi everyone,

I'm planning to transition from undergrad to serious grad student in just a couple weeks, and I would love to get a head start on beefing up my CV for my 2017 PhD applications. Does anyone know of conferences being held this summer which allow independent researchers (since I would be between universities)? Cost isn't really an object, although conferences in the southeast would be super convenient.

  2. Hi all! I'm going to be pursuing a mostly funded (fully funded if they decide to give me an assistanship or fellowship...) MA program beginning this Fall. I had 3 unfunded MA acceptances and only rejections from PhDs, so my choice to attend my program was relatively easy.

My background is at a small, public "party school" in the southeast, so I wasn't even  prepared for the PhD applications when I applied. Perhaps this should have been a hint that I needed not apply, but I didn't pick up on it. I feel like the PhD programs encourage applicants straight out of undergrad to apply, probably just to get the hefty application fees and in order to be able to say that they rejected 500 people. I do not see any possible way that I as an undergrad could compete with someone who has an MA. That being said, I know there are people who go straight to top MA/ PhD programs, but I feel like I was given poor advice when told to apply to those programs.

I'm unbelievably excited to finish undergrad and start my MA, and I think it will be the best thing for me. The next two years of my life are going to be dedicated to getting into a top PhD program for fall 2017!

  3. Alright guys, I've made my decision - BC it is for a two year Masters in English!! Thanks to everyone for all your helpful input over this year... I really can't thank you enough! =]

Congrats! My best friend is finishing her first year in the program and she has had only great things to say about it.

  4. Hey! Congratulations on your acceptance, and I hope that additional funding comes through for you. Fall class schedules should be up for most universities, so find three or four times/classes which work for you, and email the professor teaching the class. Be polite ("Dear Dr. Whoever: Dr. DGS directed me to email you regarding an informal TAship for your ENG 101-XX course...") and offer to send them a CV with your teaching experience/references.

You could also see if a friendly student/professor contact within the department would be willing to make introductions. I've never dealt with asking a professor for a TAship, though. Good luck!

Thank you! I've been lucky enough to meet all of the current first-year MAs and I've been emailing a couple recently. I think I'll take your advice and ask them about emailing/approaching professors for TA positions. When I visited campus, the students seemed to be suggesting that I wait until my second year to TA, but I really want to start right now and get as much experience as possible.

  5. Hi all! Congrats on your MA acceptances and funding offers!

I will be attending Wake Forest's 2-year MA program this fall. So far, I have been awarded a partial (near-full) scholarship, but current grad students say there's a chance I'll get either a fellowship or a Writing Center assistantship in the next few weeks. TA positions are informal, so I have to approach a professor and ask to work for them for free (any advice on how to do that?!)

I haven't gotten much info about registering for classes or anything yet, but I've checked out the course offerings and decided to take Modern American Lit, Contemporary American Lit, and 18th C. British. I am looking ahead towards becoming an Americanist with an emphasis in postmodernism and critical theory, and I'm taking the Brit Lit just because professor is phenomenal and I know I'll need a little more British for the GRE subject test.

  6. Sorry (not sorry) to bring a thread back from the dead, but I was wondering who has heard from, was accepted from, received funding for, and/or plans to attend Villanova this fall. I know the accepted students day is coming up but I have no idea when it'll actually be. I've chatted with some current students, but I'm very curious about prospectives like myself.

I'm about 95% sure I'll be attending Villanova, and I'd love to speak to everyone else in that boat.

Hi pannpann! Congrats on your offer. I'm accepted, but waitlisted for funding. If I get funding I will be attending, but if not I'm going to Wake Forest (funded). Also, I believe the accepted students day is April 11th.

  7. I really don't think that acknowledging privilege before each time one speaks, writes, or acts is really accomplishing anything. People should recognize that they are privileged and approach situations with that knowledge, but I don't think we are morally required to apologetically announce our privilege before expressing any sort of opinion.

  8. MA applications take longer for a variety of reasons. It could be that they had later application due dates than PhDs (I'm not sure about the programs to which you've applied), they decide how many MAs to accept based on how many PhDs they accept, or a number of other reasons. If you're really worrying, it may help to look back at previous years in the results search and see when MAs received acceptances in the past. Good luck!

  9. I don't know your personal fit with the programs, but I think the programs themselves are pretty comparable. BU has more nationally recognized prestige, to be sure, but U of SC has a great program. I know I would be struggling to decide if I was in your position, but as a third-party I would suggest taking SC's offer. Money amounts to more than we'd all like for it to.

  10.

I had started thinking about applying to PhD programs last year, but I want to be able to get into the best possible PhD program I can, which I don't feel I would be able to right now.

This is what I'm trying to do. I want to get into a top PhD program, and I'm going to try to use a good MA as a stepping stone to get there.

  11. I applied to 6 top PhD programs without really expecting to get into them, and three MAs: Georgetown, Wake Forest, and Villanova. I expect to hear from Georgetown and Wake in about three weeks based on previous years. I don't know about Villanova because their deadline is so late, but I'm visiting campus tomorrow so maybe I'll know more then.

  12. This is a question I've been debating for the past couple of days: what constitutes an "implied rejection." In reading threads from this time last year, there was much furor over people declaring an "implied rejection" far too early. I agreed last week...but now that I have an official rejection under my belt, and have seen some acceptances to places I applied to (that have yet to update my status or respond etc.), I can't deny that it's tempting to assume rejection. I think it speaks to something psychological: it's easier to cope with something definitive than it is to cope with something tenuous. If I assume that U. of Chicago and Vanderbilt aren't getting back to me, I can just focus on looking forward to the other fourteen programs I applied to, as opposed to nervously wondering about those two.

Still, I'm not going to count them completely out until I hear back from them. It's just that I think the chances are far slimmer than they were already (and they were slim to begin with...)

I'm assuming that Vanderbilt and U Chicago are rejections, too. It's easier "knowing" than being stuck in limbo, even if it's bad news. I feel better knowing for sure that I didn't get into Duke than I did when I was still waiting to hear from them.

  13. Can anyone who applied to Vanderbilt help me out?  Either the application website is formatted in a way that does not show it, or I didn't submit my SOP!!! I emailed the appropriate graduate staff member about it, and I'm waiting to hear back. Can anyone tell me what their application page looks like? If it looks similar to mine, it will ease my mind until I hear back. If it doesn't, at least I'll know I screwed up.

  14. My roommate and I both applied to University of Chicago, and neither of us heard anything about interviews (yet?). The anxiety of waiting is killing me! I hope I'll get one acceptance soon so I can stop freaking out. Based on previous years, I think we might hear form Duke tomorrow! I'm going to wear blue tomorrow, just in case.

I applied to: UChicago, Duke, Vanderbilt, UPenn, Columbia, Brown, Georgetown (MA), Wake Forest (MA)
